Baby Names

DD - post your comments here

There was a DD. The post was saying how her friend or relative named her daughters Bonnie and Elsa. She said how cruel those names were, and that they sounded like cows.

If you took the time to put thought into and post a response, or were in the process of responding, or if you just want to agree or disagree with the names reminding you of cow names, use this thread to post them here.

  • I think Elsa is absolutely beautiful, and on my short list for a girl someday.  It's a classic, feminine name.  Bonnie is NMS, but I will say that every Bonnie I've ever known was so sweet.  I think they are lovely, refreshing choices in today's world.....not cruel in the slightest.

  • I have seen people several times equate a name with that of a cow.  I find it quite irritating.  For some reasons, comments about knowing 17 dogs named the same thing are less annoying.  Maybe it's because people give cute human names to dogs and people find dogs loveable but a cow, not so much.

I didn't see the original post but I love Elsa and it's close cousin Elsie (which I think I've seen the cow reference for as well).  They're both older and traditional names from Elizabeth.  There is nothing wrong with these names.  I don't care for made up names or the new "aiden" and "axton" trends but I'm not going to equate them with something I perceive as negative.  Nor do I call names stripper names.  I just think people can find verifiable reasons to dislike a name and not have to be so harsh about it, no matter how awful the name is.  You can say Jaxton sounds made up, or is awful or whatnot but you don't need to say it sounds like a kid who is destined to eat dirt his whole life.

Anyway, Bonnie is also nice.  It means pretty, so why not love it?

  • I really like Elsa a lot. Bonnie is nms but if I saw it used on a little girl I would probably think it was absolutely adorable. I would never think of cows, and to say it's "cruel" to name a child that was pretty harsh.

    I totally agree.

Elsie is the cow's name, not Elsa. And while neither of those happen to be on my list, Elsie's son's name is. And that association doesn't bother me at all.

Bonnie is also on my list. I'm not exactly sure why she associated it with a cow. I think it's lovely. I realize it isn't for everyone, but I certainly wouldn't think it's cruel by any stretch of the imagination.

The only names that make me think of a cow are Heffer and Bessey.

  • Eaglefoot, you're amazing. Seriously.

As for names, I actually find myself liking Elsa. Bonnie is nms, but I wouldn't think of a cow.

  • When I hear Bonnie I think of Gone With the Wind-- and that little girl was adorable!

Elsa isn't my style, but cute nonetheless.

  • I didn't see the post but I don't see how either name could be associated as a cow name. I have an aunt and a great-aunt named Bonnie. And Slukd79, you're so right about the little girl in GWTW, she was really adorable.
