Did you have your LO in underwear and have them tell you when they had to go? Also, how many days was it before you were able to leave the house (like to go to the store) and if you did leave the house during the very beginning, did you put a diaper on LO? Did it confuse them when they had a diaper on sometimes and not others? Thanks! I'm just toying with how I want to approach PT...any advice would be awesome!
Re: If you did not use 3 day method for PT...
I let my kids go bottomless at home for a period of weeks with a little potty in the living room to start. Did not set a timer or put them on the potty. They decided when naturally they needed to go.
Slowly moved the potty closer and closer to the bathroom over a couple of weeks.
Then a week or so at home with underwear. Then short trips with underwear/pants/shorts.
Then...full time underwear. DS1 potty trained fairly easily at 2.5 years over a period of approx 2 months (went on a 2 week vacation during that time that he was in pull ups most days). DS2 is nearly 2.5 and I haven't changed a diaper in 2 weeks. Still some messes, but we are nearly there.
I used pull ups for outings that I thought would result in an accident. It was ok.
DS is almost 3 so I decided it was time. I just switched him to underwear one day and told him he needed to go on the potty from now on. I couldn't bear not leaving the house so if we went out in those first few days I put a pull up on over the underwear so he would still feel the wetness if he went but it wouldn't make a mess in my car or wherever we were. It really only took a few days before he caught on. We also used a homemade sticker chart that really seemed to encourage him. It's only been a couple weeks and although I put a diaper on him at night it's usually dry in the morning now. I was putting a pull up on him at nap time but he doesn't even need that now.
I have heard great things about the 3 day method, I just didn't feel like doing it that way.
DD was in pull ups (no more diapers) for a few months before she turned 2. I started officially PT when she turned 2 with sitting on the potty, and I would say about a month in we switched to big girl panties when awake. I think pull ups really worked for her. She just got it and hated feeling wet. She started to ask to sit on the potty right off the bat and we didn't really have a hard time with it.
We kept pull ups on when sleeping and I think by Christmas she was in big girl panties all day and when sleeping. One day she just said she wanted to sleep with panties on, so I put a potty seat in her bedroom and it's been fine. I was strict about no fluids after 7pm but now she drinks until bedtime and it's fine, no accidents to speak of.
The only places that we went for a long time were relatives houses where she was comfortable pottying. I didn't take her out in public for a few months but I think it had more to do with my comfort level than hers.
