Toddlers: 24 Months+

DS has blood in poop (sorry, it's long)

Hi ladies,

I havent been around in a while, (iIve been busy working, andtaking care of DS, etc) but I wanted to see if any of your LO's have had these issues that DS is goind thru lately.

On May 5 (last month) DH and I noticed that DS had blood in his poop.  And it was a lot.  He even had a big blood clot in it.  This occurred of course after hours, so I called the pedi on his after hours line, and he said that if it happened again that night, to take him to the ER.  So DS had another bowel movement that night, and it had blood again.  It didnt have as much blood, but since I am a worry wart we took him to the ER anyways.  The ER Dr. took blood, checked out his butt and said that he thought it was probably an anal fizzure and to follow up w/ his pedi.

The next morning, I made an appt w/ his pedi, he checked his butt again, checked his poop (yes I saved it to show him and the ER Dr. the night before) and he said that he could see that it was indeed an anal fizzure and to just give him lots of fruits that would keep him regular, since DS does tend to have harder stools.  Fruits like plums, prunes, raisins etc and to give him lots of liquids.  Pedi said that if it continued after a month to go back.  He did say that he would still bleed intermittenly (sp?) for about a month or so, but if it continued after that to bring him in.

So DS was still bleeding a bit on and off in May and parts of June, but it was very little and usually after a harder stool.  Then this past Monday, my Mom calls me (she is my daycare provider) to tell me that DS had a lot of blood in his poop again and that there was a blood clot and a piece of mass that she found in his poop. She saved it for me and told me I should probably call the pedi again.

I called the pedi again the next day and we went in (this was this past Tuesday).  The pedi saw the mass, the blood clot (it was pretty big) and the poop from that stool movement.  He ordered poop samples to be sent to the laboratory and he was going to make a referral for DS to go see a pediatric gastrointerologist (sp?).

He said that it could be an internal hemorrhoid (sp?) or a bacterial infection in his system, such as salmonella.  He said not to worry about it until we get the results back from the lab on his poop and until we see the pedi gastrointerologist.  Of course, that doesnt help much, since I ALWAYS worry, even on the little stuff, so I am kinda freaking out.  And we cant make an appt. w/ the specialist until we get the referral (HMO insurance), which will take aobut a week or so.

The funny thing is that DS doesnt complain of any tummy pains or pain when he has a bowel movement (the pedi asked if DS complained), and he is happy go lucky kid.

So I was just wondering if any of you ladies have had any similar experiences with your LO's and what information you may be able to provide to me.

TIA

Re: DS has blood in poop (sorry, it's long)

  • You must be so scared, I'm sorry!  I hope it's nothing...  The one time S had blood in his poop, he also had a bloody nose the same day so I rushed him to the pedi (and took the poop with me).  They tested him for ITP which is a platelet issue.  He doesn't have it but she said bloody stool can be a symptom of that.  Are they running a complete blood panel?  That will tell them a lot aside from the GI.

Thanks for responding. At this time they have not ordered a blood draw.  THe ER Dr. did do a blood draw on May 5, 2011, and he said everything looked good.  But other than that one, a new one has not been ordered.  I will ask the pedi gastrointerologist to see if they can/should do that.

  • Wow, we're kinda going through the same thing right now.

DS had his 2yr check-up last Friday and has had diarrhea ever since (but they say it's not related to the shots he received). We've restricted his diet to BRAT, pedialyte and Keifer but his BM's have continued to be runny/oily (although not bloody/mucus-y) and just this afternoon he started projectile vomitting.

We're going to the Dr. in the morning for GI testing and they mentioned salmonella to us as well.

And DS is acting completely normal as well. His attitude, appetite, energy, etc. is completely normal.

I hope you guys get some answers tomorrow, please keep us updated Smile

Thanks so much A. love.  When the pedi mentioned salmonella, I was kinda surprised, but he said it could be the reason this was happening.  Hopefully we get the referral to the specialist soon so that we can figure out whats going on.

Good luck to your LO too.  Hopefully everything clears up soon.
