No, the outside is waterproof, and with an insert it is a complete diaper!  It is called a pocket diaper because you stuff something absorbant into the pocket. 

If you are looking at cottonbabies seconds, they don't come with inserts, but you can use almost any insert, prefold, or flat folded up.  A lot of people like hemp inserts.

Oy!  I thought the BG was a cover.

I am still so confused about all this.  I am going to buy some BG's and some inserts (have no clue yet what kind or from where) and start after my baby is one month or so and see how it goes.  I am new to CD (and will be a FTM).

The seconds are here. They don't come with inserts, but you can get gently used ones here.
