Getting Sophia's ears pierced

DH finally said maybe which I take as a yes.  I was at the mall yesterday and going to do it but I just couldn't knowing dh was so against it.  He really believes that I will enter her into beauty pagents.  He must forget that I don't have time for that I work almost every weekend.  All he asked was I don't get the balls in her ears. He likes the little crystal flowers or something like that.

  • Yay! I know I'm biased but I think it's adorable. Nat's haven't bothered her for even 1 minute. Oh and there was very little choices in earrings to use at the places we looked. They have to be 14k gold when piercing babies.

  • I looked at piercing pagoda andclaires.  At piercing pagoda there was 3 sides to a spinning case that we could use for her.  I had to show dh natalie's pics b/c his other argument was everyone will notice the earrings instead of her. it will take away from her beauty. and cause pain.
  • You know what? If N ends of hating them, they can just be taken out- that's what I figured. I'm sure it does hurt, but only for a second. Nat was back asleep literally 45 seconds after the piercing.

  • I did Charlotte at almost 5 months and she has not touched them once. People do notice them, but I think they look super cute. I know a lot of people have problems with them, but my thinking is that you can only do it until they get up to about 9 months and then you have to wait until about 8 or 9 years old, at which point it becomes something that could be scary and then they chicken out. Actually when I took Charlotte, we watched an 11-yr sit there saying "I don't know, I'm so scared, I am not sure..." which you know she wanted them but was getting nervous. So I just figured, I am not giving her a chance to chicken out. They are easy to care for, she cried far less than she ever has for a shot, she sleeps fine with them and they don't come with the nasty side effects of shots. If you want her to have them, go for it.

  • I hope I didn't miss the window of opportunity.  My aunt took me when I was 6 weeks old without my parents permission and had mine done. I got my 2nd hole when I was in highschool with my mom but I let it close up so I had to redo it in college. I remember being nervous even at 18 b/c of that click sound.

This is the first I have ever heard of this and unless I am reading this wrong I don't think that is true. I had mine done when I was three and my younger cousins had them done when they were 5 (teenagers now). I tried googling and didn't find any where that you have to wait until 8 or 9 to have your ears pierced.

Julie, I don't think you missed the window. I went to Claire's website and it had no age restrictions other then any minors need an adult. We're going to wait until she's three, right now I fear she will pull them out like she does with hair bows and sun hats. Good luck!

  • Ya, I don't think she was saying that it is a rule that the earing people have or any real type of rule.  Just that once they get older, they will start to play with them and pull on them and stuff.  Like if I wanted to go do dd's right now, I know it would be a disaster.  Because she would not leave it alone until it was all healed.  She picked off her stitches scab this morning and made it bleed.  She pulls hair clips out with chunks of hair.  I think she was just saying, the younger the baby, the more apt they are to leave it alone during the healing process.  Sophia is probably still a fine age to do it, but I agree and would do it asap if you are going to.

Not that it is a rule, that is just how I feel. I had mine done at about 3 or 4 and 1 - I let the lady do one and didn't want her to do the other and 2 - the lady told me I had to be very careful so they didn't fall out so instead I kept making them tighter and tighter until I almost pushed the pearls through my ears and they got uber infected. All I was saying is that I feel the ages in between would be more apt to play with them or be afraid and not want it.

Haha - yeah...this is why you need to have adult supervision and why we won't do it. I just don't want ONE more thing on my plate of things to do :) I really don't like sleeping with earrings in so I wouldn't want to do that to my babe just in case she feels the same way. My 4.5 yo niece just had them done and she did great and loves them!

Oh, and places now can do both ears at the same time - which I would definitely do when Leah wants to have hers done. I was planning on making a day of it with her. I think it's cute when older babies have theirs done - but I'm not a fan on really itty bitty ones, though. I definitely think people notice those before the actual baby..sort of like an "OMG she is really young to have her ears pierced!!" Even though to your face they will say "aww how cute" (never thought about it like that - but I think it is true in a lot of cases) Not that that would bother me to the point of not doing it...just thought I would comment.

If you really want to do it - then do it!! I bet she will be suer cute in them :)

Wow, you guys know people with a lot more tact than I do. No one I know has been afraid to make a face and say, "You got her ears pierced?!" Guess what, it isn't your kid, hence, not your decision. Also, the lady at Claire's told me that they should not do it both ears at once (maybe this was because Charlotte is still young) because they squirm too much and can't always get the right spot on the ear.
