Parenting after 35

Portable crib?

We're traveling to Florida soon and my parents (who watched Adrian for 8 months) STILL don't have a crib, play pen or anything at their house (I don't get it honestly). Adrian is going to stay there for several nights while we're there, and I don't think he'll sleep or fit well in his PNP. I was looking at portable cribs but they seem as small as the PNP. Any advice on what to buy for him to sleep in (and not past $120)? He's big, about 35" high and 32 lbs so I'm not sure what's going to work. And he'll get out of a toddler bed for sure since he's not used to sleeping in one.

Any input would be most appreciated! Smile

The PNP may work. Mikey's about Adrian's size and slept fine in a PNP while we were in the UK.
  • Do you have one of those baby corrals/baby yards?  Maybe you can set one of those up and place the crib mattress on the floor inside of it.  That way he'll be comfy and he won't be able to escape.  I can't say I've ever actually tried this- it's just a suggestion. :)

  • Honestly, kids don't get as uncomfortable as you and I would.   I think you're probably fine with the PNP for a short period of time.   I wouldn't spend any extra $$.

    But I'm cheap!

check the sizing but you can get a very basic Graco PNP for $50.  That's what we use all the time.  probably would work fine.  just take some blankets to cushion it under the sheet.

  • When J. was about 1.5 y.o., we bought a convertible crib from Target for $150 for our other house (also in Fla). We stay there a couple of weeks every year. Last time we were there in May, and we still didn't convert the crib into a bed. J. was still using the crib version even though he has been sleeping in a regular bed for 2 years here in NJ. (The baby slept in a PnP down in Florida). Anyway, perhaps a convertible crib is a good investment. You can convert it into a bed later on, assuming Adrian will be stayng with his grandparents again in the future. Plus, I forgot, did you want to have another baby?

  • You are right at the limit for the PNP and mini/portacrib size = 35 inches.  If you have a PNP already you could get away with it one more time but I wouldn't buy anything.  Are you fundamentally opposed to having him co-sleep with you?  We do it ocassionally when traveling when we cant get a crib rental and it doesn't disrupt DS's routine because his sleeping habits are well established.

  • I measured the PNP and looked online at the measurements for a portable crib and they're the same. So maybe I'll just use the PNP. I'll have to pay xtra at the airport though, b/c we're already taking the car seat and if I take the PNP it will be $25 each way. It's better to just buy another one and ship it to my parents or have them buy it.

    I can't use a yard b/c we don't own it and it's $50 I think?

And forget about co-sleeping, Adrian is a crazy sleeper and no one will get a good night's sleep. Also, if he wakes up middle of the night and sees us in bed, he'll wake up completely and want to play. This has happened before, lol.

Anyway, I guess we can use some kind of base under the PNP mattress, b/c last time Adrian was sinking into it and not sleeping too well.

Thanks for the suggestions though! Smile

I didn't even know about this option. I looked online and it costs the same as a portable crib but it's full size ($109). This might be good for my parents to have now and in the future b/c it converts to a toddler bed. Good idea, I think this is what I'll do! I hope my parents will pay for it though :)

And I feel that I should add that M usually slept diagonally across the PNP.
  • I have a blow up bed for Noah (size of a 5 year old and last fall, I couldn't get him to sleep. He ended up curling up in a pack n play. He was way too small for it but slept fine. Finn is really big two, wears a 2T in shorts but can wear a 3T in shirts. He fits fine in the pack n play. Pack n plays are our friends :)

  • Well, it looks like my parents got a PNP instead and they're just going to cushion the bottom. I think it will be fine, Adrian's used to sleeping on a very firm mattress anyway.

BEFORE you do this.. contact your airline.. we flew to LA last year and we didn't have to pay extra for any baby items bc you HAVE to bring a carseat, etc.... we brought our baby bjorn travel crib lite (like a PNP but easier to travel with), carseat, stroller, even the diaper bag didn't cost us or count as a carry on.  Anything to do with babies, they don't count, but you just have to tell them which items.  I think it was JetBlue that we flew.. but call your airline.
