A really stupid question about baby toothbrushes

I have seen some different kinds (nubby, with bristles, shaped like a banana...) and I have no idea what is best to get.  And I am severely behind on this since C is about to pop her third tooth.  I feel like a moron asking this but I am clueless.  I at least know not to give her toothpaste, if that counts for anything. :)

  • I'm not sure either... I just know that the softness of the toothbrush is associated with the age on the package. Ella likes the 3-5 toothbrushes only because I used to work at a dental office and stocked up on them! :) I suppose you could call a pediatric dental office and ask.

  • Someone here may be trying to pressure you to get an aquafresh one just becuase it is free with coupons... (Wink)

I think the best kind for when they just have a few teeth is the blue rubber one that goes on your finger and has the teeny rubber "bristles"  but really I dont think it matters much as long as the bristles are soft.

This is the one we used when Livy got her first couple teeth.  Now she has a Winnie the Pooh one that's for 3-24 months.  We use a "starter toothpaste" that is for babies and has no fluoride in it so it's safer if they swallow it.

I know, right?  Caldwell must own a lot of Aquafresh stock or something. :)

Thanks guys!  I think DH can get a pet version of that at work for like no money...I'm willing to bet it's the same thing, different package. ;)

  • The blue one that goes over your finger came free with infant toothpaste.  I used that til he started biting me.  Then I just bought a kid toothbrush.  Since then I've just used free toothbrushes from the dentist - no need for coupons!  ;)

  • Sorry, I promise we have no stock in Aquafresh.

  • At that age with only a few teeth you can just give her a damp wash cloth to chew on and then just wipe them a little with it.
  • Ack!  This now reminds me that not only am I the bad mommy who puts her child to bed late and doesn't follow Babywise or own stock in Aquafresh, but also does not yet have a baby toothbrush.  My child is doomed!Wink

  • My SIL is a dental hygienist and gave us a whole tooth care package, as part of my shower gift.  She gave us the Oral-B stage 1 brush (age 4-24 mos) to use when we start.  She also gave us a handful of "First Teeth" baby toothpaste packets and a tube of Orajel training toothpaste. (And a timer to make sure teeth are brushed for 60 secs, a kids book about toothbrushing, and floss picks.  haha)

Interestingly, the hygienist that I see said not to worry about bringing kids in to the dentist until they're 3.  But my SIL said to start at age 1.

Btw, apparently there's a Kids Sonicare, too.  SIL said not to be surprised if J gets that as a gift, when he's a little older. :-)

  • I just bought any ole soft toothbrush to run over them when they were little.  of course both mine didn't get their first tooth until after 10 months!

Like Caldwell- I get whatever I have a coupon for or is the cheapest.  They like to chew on 'em so they don't last to long.

As far as the timer like Lexi wrote...Target has a Firefly toothbrush for around $1 and you push the nub on the end and it lights up and flashes for 1 minute so you know to brush while the light is on.  It was great for the kids!  I told our hygenist about it and she was going to buy some for her grandkids!

  • My dentist gave me a few of these triangle shaped ones that had soft brushes on the corners. Works as a teether and brushes at the same time! Cam LOVED it!

Ben has a kids Oral B electric toothbrush.  OUr dentist was giving them away at their booth at the preschool fair that Parent Map puts on.

  • We also use the blue finger one w/o toothpaste for now. M got teeth early and currently has 6, so far I have yet to be bitten (watch, she bites me tomorrow). We are only brushing once a day, usually in the morning I brush my teeth and then hers.
