Cloth Diapering

Baking soda question

Hi ladies. I'm a lurker on this board and had a question for you all!

I'm not sure if it was the Bump or another site I was on where people were discussing just washing CD's in baking soda. Was it here? Has anyone tried and had luck with just that alone?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Baking soda question

  • I don't know about baking soda, but I bought some Washing Soda to wash my CD's with. But, I haven't done any washing yet. I have until December. :)

  • Loading the player...
  • I have read a few things on the washing soda as well. Is that all you're planning on using with yours?

I was almost for sure that this board was the one the baking soda discussion was on but with preggo brain, I could so be wrong! ; )

  • I read something about a Borax/Washing Soda mixture...so that's my current plan. But I'm going to test that on my own stuff, with my sensitive skin, before I try that on baby.

Because of my own sensitivities, I didn't want to risk buying some expensive detergent that I'd have to get rid of. I bought both the Borax, and Washing Soda for about $5.

Other than that, I'm hoping I won't have to use anything else.

  • That's a good plan. My 5 1/2 yr old DD has really sensitive skin as well so we have to watch what we try out - so I get where you're coming from about buying a detergent that is pricey and not being able to use it otherwise.

Makes me wonder if this LO will have the same sensitive issues as my first DD.  Because of DD's skin was the reason we decided on cloth this time actually. She was allergic to almost every brand of diaper we tried - except the 2 most expensive brands of course! Poor thing. I wish I would have known more about CD back then.

  • Poor thing. My skin became sensitive all of a sudden when I was 5... I had a full body rash for awhile until my mom could wash everything (bedding, clothes, etc) in something new. I'm even allergic to Dawn dish soap! I believe it was Dawn anyway.

I don't buy bubble bath, I'm careful about body wash. And pregnancy has not helped. But all that's made me more aware myself of chemicals... Probably a huge contributor to my decision to cloth diaper.

  • It definetly helps make that decision (to CD) when you have issues like that. My DD has had issues since birth. She's gotten a lot better now that she's getting older though!

Used to you would touch her back, tummy, and arms and feel bumps EVERYWHERE from being so dry (with her bottom it was always red with blotches all over. You could tell it was so raw).

Lotions never helped for the skin - the pedi would always have to prescribe a steroid that was mixed with Eucerin and it would take a few days but then it would start clearning up a bit. For her constant diaper rashes we had some kind of steroid for just diaper changes. Then, repeat the cycle.

The good news is the last time we had to go get the script for a skin breakout was back in January so she is really doing so much better and I hope she can continue to grow out of it to a point where she won't have ANY issues.
