Vacations with a 2 year old?

We were talking about taking a family trip with my parents and grandparents about a 4 hour drive from here in August. I just figured out today that what I thought was a Children's Museum isn't really. There really isn't a lot more to do for her age range inside during that time (since it is HOT in the Midwest in August) so I am now looking at other options.

What are your go to August/September vacation ideas that aren't super expensive (we are taking a just hubby and I trip to Maui in November so our travel budget for this trip is small)? We could possibly consider a flight if it isn't too long from the Midwest.

  • DS is happy to explore just about anywhere.  A park, a beach, a new grassy backyard.

I believe if you're happy, then your child is happy.  What does your LO like to do?  Explore?

Exploring is a perfect opportunity to show them what a tree, grass, etc. looks like.

  • At this age, my son just loves moving and grooving more than anything.  It doesn't matter where we are - as long as he can walk around and get some energy out, he's good.  We live in Sicily, and recently went to Malta on long weekend and seriously the best part of the trip was the hop on/hop off tour bus.  He loved talking with the other passengers, looking out the window, etc.  And any time we found a piazza that he could just run around in, we let him and he loved it.  No children's museum required!

Not sure how feasible it would be from where you are, but Indianapolis has a fantastic Children's museum.

  • where were you thinking of going?  a city?  A lake?  like the others said as long as they can explore a bit he should be fine...we are taking the girls to the beach with my ILs and Dh's sisters...we are renting ahouse (not too expensive with all of us) and since we have  afull kitchen, we will be able to eat most meals in (a $$ saver)...I am thinking the girls will be fully entertained with the sand/water/rocks/running...like the other poster said - so long as you have a space for running/exploring she will be fine...
