Freaking out because I ate corned beef for lunch

I feel so silly posting this, but I will anyway.  I went to a deli with my coworkers today.  I decided to order the reuben.  Since the meat was served warm, I figured it was a good choice.  Unfortunately, the center was still cold, and the service was absolutely horrible, so I ate it anyway--I was STARVING!  At the time it didn't seem like a bad idea.  Now that I'm home, I'm freaking out.  Am I being a crazy, paranoid pregnant lady??

  • I don't think you have anything to worry about, if it's not a daily thing.  Next time, just bring it back and ask them to heat it a bit longer for you!  That's their job!

  • I actually just posted a deli meat/listeria post right before you! I am paranoid as it is, but if it makes you feel better I did at one time in my pregnancy with DD eat a "warmed" up sandwich from Panera and it wasn't exactly warmed enough to kill bacteria if there had been any.  I asked my ob and she wasn't concerned-said a risk is just that-not definite, just a risk that you can eliminate if you don't partake.  She said just to be careful as much as possible to make that small risk even smaller.  But, like I am trying to convince myself, not all deli meat has the listeria bacteria in it.  So try not to beat yourself up over this one incident and keep trying your best to stay healthy.  We can't avoid everything.

  • I don't think you have anything to worry about.  I eat subs from subway, gandolfo's, jimmy johns, etc.. whenever I get the chance, without them being heated.  Last night I had a homemade pastrami sandwich and it was soo tasty!! All my girlfriends that have had babies in the last 8 yrs have eaten sandwiches whenever they wanted and all their babies are just fine.

  • I haven't had deli meat since my BFP but have been craving it today! I really want a Market Fresh sammy from Arby's, I'm thinking I'll cave and get one for dinner.

  • I've absentmindedly eaten around 3 cold lunchmeat sandwiches during the length of this pregnancy. I do try to heat up the meat when I remember, though. There are plenty of women who disregard this rule of thumb and have healthy babies. One sandwich is incredibly unlikely to make you ill. Try not to think about it, OK?

  • My doctor has not limited anything. She said if I occassionally want cold lunch meat then it is perfectly fine but don't eat it daily. Same with soft cheeses....so I hope that is a bit reassuring to you. Now if you were to get sick today or tomorrow then I would call your doctor...but I think it will all be fine!

  • Just because I was curious I googled to find the rates of listeria in pregnant women. The CDC estimates there were 200 cases of listeria in pregnant women in 2007 in the US, and 800 total in the US. That is a pretty small number! You are probably safe.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2621056/

  • Mmmmmm a reuben sounds SO good right now.

Relax. Unless you were buying a sandwich out of a vending machine in some sketch waiting room, you have nothing to worry about.

  • Yes you are paranoid!!! lol

You're fine, I've eaten plenty of deli sandwiches (not heated totally through) since I was pregnant, and in my last pregnancy.  The chances of you getting listeria are SO small...don't live your pregnant life in a bubble, enjoy it!

  • I love cold lunch meat, and I seriously doubt I'm going to get listeria from it.

  • I have had cold meat sandwhiches on several occassions. Don't worry. My doctor said as long as you aren't eating it all day every day you'll be fine.

  • i eat sandwiches almost daily - I buy only enough meat for two days and throw anything else out.  I don't think there is anything fret over.   The meet coming from a deli is probably cut fresh and isn't sitting around.  You are fine.   You are probalby more at risk eating eating undercooked chicken than a sandwich.
  • See post below you for why you are over reacting and worrying for no reason. Which the worry is probably worse for your baby than all the corned beef you can eat.
