Baby Names

Why the pressure?

I am just wondering if any other mommies-to-be and DH's are getting asked a thousand times about a name? Don't get me wrong, no one is being a jerk about it but it just seems like everyone else is so much more worried about naming our son than we are. LOL! Is anyone else experiencing this??

I am not trying to be mean, don't get me wrong. I'm sure every one is just super excited for us and that's how they are connecting to our experience. We've just been doing a lot of out-of-town family visiting the past two months and that seems to be what everyone wants to know and contribute their "two cents" on.

Where as DH and I are just as happy collect a short list of names and waiting it out. I think that we will have to see him to know what will suit him.

Re: Why the pressure?

  • My mom asked about the name again yesterday. When I told her that I really hadn't decided (we have a list of 3 and may not pick 1 until we meet him), she started yelling fine! don't tell me! you don't have to tell me!

That was a little crazy. My husband's cousin keeps asking in a much nicer way and I almost feel bad not telling her, like I'm being secretive or something.

  • People kept asking with DD and we just told everyone that we had a couple we liked and they'd find out after she was born.  I'm so glad we opted not to tell.  It really saved us from having to put up with everyones opinions.

  • With DD we had a few names and picked a final name after she was born. We plan on doing the same with this, but of course people continually ask what our top choices our. Of course our initial top choice is being changed, but friends are already calling the baby by that name. Ugh, this is why I don't commit to a name. I am not going to call the baby something only to change it later on. Definitely not giving any hints from now on!

  • We told people right from the start with DD that we weren't sharing her name until she was born - same thing with this LO. That kept some people from asking, others not so much, but it didn't stop anyone from making suggestions. Everyone thinks they have the perfect name. I just smile and nod.

  • We have been telling people that we want to keep it to family names and that we have a few in mind but we haven't decided. We told our parents our ideas, thinking that was safe...but we still got some negativity and skepticism. So, we learned our lesson on that and just ignored the comments but next time, we will keep names top secret. ;)

  • Yeah, I get asked all the time. People actually laugh in my face when I tell them we're going into the hospital with a list, "Well you better hurry up and pick something!".

    Eh, whatever.

  • I get asked about names a lot.  I think it's just one of those questions people feel the need to ask pregnant women.  I could understand if I was further along in my pregnancy, but I'm not even 20 weeks in yet, so it seems a little weird to me to ask so early.  I just tell most people that we've been discussing names but haven't come to a decision yet.  Honestly, I don't want to share the names because I don't want unsolicited opinions.
