How long do toddlers use a toddler bed?

My DS is still in his crib.  We have a convertible crib and bought the conversion kit with the rail to turn it into a toddler bed, and after that, it turns into a full size bed.  He does just fine in the crib now, and hasn't tried to climb out, but I'm wondering if we wait until closer to 3, will it even be worth it to turn it into a toddler bed first, or should we just go straight to a full size?  The toddler bed uses the crib mattress, if that makes a difference.
