Two Under 2

Are your days made up of waiting on alternating naps?

Mine are. DS2 (9mo) takes a nap at about 9 and 2 and DS1 takes his only nap at noon. We have very small windows of time where we can go somewhere and neither will nap on the go. Also DS1 will not nap at all if I make it any later. I'm sure this time will seem short in retrospect but it is kind of a bummer right now. Also neither requires an insane amount of outings to be entertained because they are young so I guess it's ok. IDK. How do you deal with it?

  • I'm wondering about this. I cherish naptime right now! And am wondering when the new baby comes if they will ever nap at the same time.

  • DD2 can nap on the go, so mornings are the time to leave the house.  I leave right before her nap and she falls asleep in the car.  DD1 naps around 12:30, so I try to be home by 11:30 to avoid her falling asleep in the car and ruining her afternoon nap.  She naps until 3:30-4, so we don't go anywhere in the afternoons, unless it's by foot to the pool or park.  Traffic is bad here.

You described my days exactly. Seriously - our kids nap at the same time as yours. Neither sleeps on the go, so we have to be home for naps most days. I tell my DH that I feel like I'm in a cage some days because I am so tied to the house for 6+ hrs. I figure in a few months it should get better and they'll hopefully nap at the same time. DS1 switched to one nap at almost 13 months (literally the week before DS2 came), so I'll probably give DS2 a little push to get him down to one nap at about that same age. I keep trying to tell myself to enjoy the one on one time I'm getting with each of them for now.

  • Sort of. DS is JUST now entering the phase of more "scheduled" naps, meaning a regular morning and a regular afternoon nap. Of course, the timing depends on when he wakes in the morning and how long his naps actually are but yes.... these days there's not much time to go out. When they DO nap at the same time, I utilize it and get out of the house for about 2 hours when they wake up.

It's just a phase though. They used to nap at the same time, and when DS goes to 1 nap in about 4-6 months, they'll nap at the same time again.

I'm in the same boat.  LO#2 goes down around 9:30 or 10 and gets up at around 2pm.  LO#1 goes down between 12:30 and 2pm and gets up around 4ish.  The only time I can get out is early morning.  It does kind of suck, but I do enjoy the one on one time.  And yes my house is a mess.

Oh and it also keeps me home instead of spending money at the store.
  • Our oldest just turned 2 and was never a good napper or sleeper.  Ironically, he learned drowsy but awake (after MANY failed attempts) right after the baby came home and it was pure heaven!  Since I was never used to naps, I don't really count on them.  The baby, almost 10 months old has been down to 1 long nap or else two quick ones since about 4 or 5 months.  Honestly it was harder for me when he was in the NB stage and napping every two hours or so.  It was tough trying to schedule walks, errands, etc. in between naps and feeding.  Any nap I get from our toddler I am grateful for!

  • A lot of the time, yes.  It can be very frustrating.  DD2 gets shorted out of her morning nap a lot so that we can take a walk.  She doesn't nap on the go either.  So a lot of the time i just have to resign myself to the fact that she will be screaming bloody murder from exhaustion towards the end of the outing.
