Was your first STTN when you got pregnant?

MH and I have always planned to have our kids close in age. My DD is 5 months old and we plan on trying for our second in 4-5 months. She still wakes up 2-3 times a night and don't see this changing anytime soon. Was your first STTN during your first trimester? If not, how hard was it to go through morning sickness on not much sleep? I am just a little worried and would love to hear your experience. Thanks! Sorry for the format on my phone

  • Nope. DS1 was 4 months when I got pg again. He was also up 2-3 time a night. It was a big blur. I was still bf. I don't know how it worked out but it did. At 6 months, we did sleep training and he became a great sleeper. He slept 7pm till about 5. I would feed him at 5 and then he went back to sleep and so did I. He started sleeping 12 hours straight at about 8.5 months. That was nice for my third tri. I got 3 whole months of decent sleep before the new guy. Now I'm just waiting to get decent sleep again...

  • My first stopped STTN at 6.5 months and didnt start again until 11+ months. DH took the majority of the night wakings when I was exhausted.

Nope! DD was 5 months old when I got pregnant. She stopped STTN at 4 months old and didn't start again until 3 weeks ago because we sleep trained her. She used to wake anywhere from 3-11 times a night for her pacifier. It was ridiculous and DH and I were exhausted. We ended up taking her pacifier away and sleep training her using the Baby Whisperer method (non-CIO) and it was the best thing ever.

But now I am secretly dreading the NB stage again when I will get no sleep all over again! Tongue Tied

  • Nope! DD didn't really STTN until almost 19.5 months so I spent about the first half of my pregnancy with night wakings. ANd then my bladder shrank so I still get up at least once a night. Right now I feel like I will never get a good night's sleep again but oh well.

  • I nightweaned DS when I got pregnant - he was 13 months old.  It was the first time he ever slept all night long.  He still wakes up once a night on a handful of nights a week, but the baby is up all the time too so whatever.  I got 6 months of sleep and now back to the deprivation......
  • Heck yes.  I don't think I ever could have brought myself to start trying if she wasn't!  That being said, DD was still getting up once a night at 5 months and by about 6 months she was pretty consistently STTN.  So things could change for you soon!  I was super-tired in my first trimester and would have been a total zombie if I'd been woken up at night too.

  • Nope, DD1 was up several times at night to nurse.  I started weaning her to whole milk at 11.5 months and we finished nursing on her first birthday.  It took another 2 weeks after that to get her to completely STTN (I was around 20 weeks pg at this point).  What helped me was the fact that she was still taking two naps per day during my first tri, so there were days that I napped twice too.

  • Nope. DS is one, sleep is a nightmare, Baby 2 is due in six months, and I work full time. I am exhausted, sick, and crying all of the time. DH is no help.
  • DD was 7 months when I got my bfp and she wasn't sttn.. luckily she started to around 10 months. I was actually surprised as I was expecting two babies not to sttn or at least DD not to start till right before lo arrived. Things can change! I didn't put sttn as a factor when ttc since we actually started when she was 5 months.. it wasn't too bad getting up but I didn't have killer m/s. Good luck!
  • DS was not STTN (by my definition) when we were TTC. At the very beginning of my pregnancy he was still waking to eat around 4 am. We followed Dr. Ferber's recommendations very soon after BFP when DS was 9 months old. It worked like a charm and now our little man usually sleeps 11 hours a night.

If I has that situation to do over again, I wouldn't delay TTC but I would have sleep trained at 6 months instead of 9 months.

  • YES. 11-12 hours. This was a big factor for me - I knew how exhausting the first trimester was, and I was working full-time and am responsible for daycare dropoff/pickup, so I knew I needed him to be sleeping consistently before I'd consider it.

We sleep trained around 7 months and by 8 months he was consistently sleeping 7pm - 7am.  I got pregnant when he was 10 months old.

Definitely NOT. DD didn't start STTN regularly until around 11 months...so just recently. I got pregnant when DD was about 4 months. In all honesty, that first tri seems like such a blur! I was so exhausted. (And still am tbh) I'm not sure how I made it through...you just do. Smile
  • My DS was a nightmare sleeper and not STTN when I got pg. We did, however, bite the bullet and stop night feeding (which put an end to night waking, using CIO) at 9 months. We had done CIO when he was younger to reduce night feeding but I needed more sleep, and frankly so did he. The result, however, was a child that just got up for the day before 5am for several months, so I was up at 4:30 through the majority of my pregnancy. I luckily didn't have morning sickness with DD, but was still very tired. I just napped every time I put DS down to sleep. I also had a babysitter for at least a half day 3x/week through my second trimester and upped it to full time the last 6 weeks bc I was pooped. I'm glad I did too so I could be as rested as possible before DD...DD is colicky and now I need full time help (like 20 hours a day) bc DH is gone 12+ hours a day and even with help I'm exhausted!!

  • Not even close.  I got my BFP when DD1 was 4.5 months, and she did not STTN until 9 months.  Until then, she was a truly awful sleeper - waking at least three times a night.  I have very bad morning sickness (lost 10 lbs during 1st tri with #2) and it was really, really hard.  Looking back now, though (DD2 is almost 9 months), I can truly say it was totally worth it.

  • Yes, thankfully my DD just started STTN about 4 months ago.. THANK GOD! It was a rough 8 months.  Of course I love her to death, yadda yadda yadda, but MAN it was hard because my DH couldn't even get up to feed her (not his fault-long story)... so it was me feeding her 24/7.
