Toddlers: 24 Months+

"No, that's MINE!"

Anyone else dealing with the "Mine" phase? It's driving me crazy and he wants to say that everything is his and tells his sisters "no, that's mine" and will take it from him. After I warn him two times, I will take it away and put it on the counter. Sometimes that bothers him, but other times he doesn't care. He's other wise a really good kid, but this is just driving me up the wall. I don't know if it will end and he will get over it or what. Any ideas to help?? Surprisingly, he is really good with sharing with others, even his sisters...just now that they are mobile and his cousins who are a couple of years older than him play more with him, he vocalizes it...eeeeh!

Re: "No, that's MINE!"

  • We just went through about 2 months of the "mine" phase and it is finally getting a lot better. It started when his brother started to get really mobile (I think they see them as more of a threat). One thing he understood really well was "Luke gets one toy and Sawyer gets one toy" (Sawyer is too young to care so mostly Luke picks who gets what). Both of them should be allowed to have their "special" toys they don't have to share. Mostly, it is a phase and it will pass.

  • Yeah, we are in that phase now. We just reiterate with, "Yes, that is yours." or "No, that is mommy's/daddy's XYZ." She sometimes gets it, sometimes not. She has even started going around saying, "That's mine. That's yours! That's Daddy's!" etc.
  • Yes!  It looks like ours are about the same ages (2 yrs 1 month and almost 10 months).  I hope it ends soon.  He's not in daycare but around kids frequently so we are trying to encourage sharing.
