DD has been itching terribly with no real visible rash..??

the past couple weeks DD has been itching her arms, legs and neck.  at first, she had a visible rash on her arms.  i took her to the Dr and he didn't seem too concerned.  he gave me a cream to put on it, but that didn't seem to help the itching.  the rash isn't visible anymore on any of her limbs, but she keeps scratching.  the past week or so she's been itching the back of her neck and behind her ears.  we've gone back to using Dreft for laundry and she hasn't had anything else new introduced.

last week we took her to urgent care and the Dr said it was seasonal allergies causing the itching and gave us allergy medication.  problem is, she's still itching.  we have to fight her to put any kind of anti-itch cream on it, but she scratches until it bleeds.

does this soune like eczema?  just allergies?  anyone else have this issue? i'm going to try and make her an appt at the Dermo here soon.

  • My 4 year old daughter has eczema and when it first developed around 18 months she did have a visible rash.  Now she is scratching all the time, but no visible rash.  So I guess it's possible that it could be eczema.  they gave us a steroid cream for when she does get a rash and other times we are supposed to use Cetaphil cream on her after baths.  Maybe you can try that and see if it helps?

  • This happens to my DD all the time.  We've ruled out allergies and have taken her to the pedi I don't even know how many times.  The only thing that keeps it at bay is to use oatmeal baths (Aveeno), keep dry cotton clothing on, and CeraVe lotion.  Use soap / shampoo at the end of the bath so she's not sitting in soapy water.  I use Cortizone or Benadryl if she's really itchy, but we use CeraVe every time we change her clothes and that's seemed to help.
  • Sounds to me like it might be dietary allergies/intolerance.  I would try an elimination diet and see if that helps any.
