DS has been scared of loud noises for about six months. My mom even made the comment yesterday that she thought he has some sensory issues regarding the noises. Other than the noise thing he is perfectly typically developing, if not slightly advanced. Our parents as teachers lady said that it was perfectly normal for his age group. I just wanted to hear some real life stories about other LOs being afraid of noises.
Re: Scared of loud noises
this seems to be the case with DD as well. Lately she covers her ears and says things are too loud (even though they don't seem too loud). I think this started a few weeks ago when I took her to a parade, which was loud, but that seemed to put some fear into her.
I'm thinking it's just a stage that they will outgrow.
Good luck
DD has the same issues, but has really always been like this. When she was an infant she was terrified if I sneezed and/or blew my nose. She has adjusted to that but still has issues with the vaccuum, electric toothbrush, food processor, etc. She also doesn't like it when DH mows the yard. I assume she will eventually outgrow this as she has adjusted to a few things like the hair dryer but she is definitely more sensitive to it and always has been.
btw, when I spoke to the pedi about it he said it was perfectly normal and that there was nothing wrong with her hearing (overly sensitive hearing). He said not to worry about it.
my dd developed a fear of airplanes (airport is across the street from dc so they are pretty loud) and she would cry every time they went outside...for 3 weeks this went on and it turned out she had a double ear infection (no other symptoms)
But I am assuming since this has been going on for months that you've already ruled that out...and some kids can just be sensative to loud noises...some kids can also have fluid in their ears (not an infection) that amplifies sounds I think...or something like that...I would have his hearing testing if you are concerned...but I think it is normal for toddlers to have fears of loud noises - sometimes loud noises startle me as a grown-up!
my DD does this too. she's always been sensitive (thus the white noise playing in her room for ever nap and bedtime!!), but lately she'll plug her ears even. and we've even had to leave a restaurant because she didnt like the sound of the music playing. umm it's pretty hard to go ANYwhere that doesnt have music playing! argh... we had to teach her that we can sing our own songs instead, that seems to have helped a tiny bit in that situation.
a long time ago a friend lent me a book called Child Sense, about how you can work with your child more easily by identifying their dominant sense, and yours too. i definitely think i have an auditory child!
