Re: Gestational Diabetes
Hey there
I was diagnosed at 24 weeks. It was a little rough at first trying to figure out what kept my number below 120, but it got much better as time went on.
My nutritionist wanted me to get lots of calcium so I added one or two Greek yogurts (lower in sugar) and at least 1 glass of milk a day into my diet. For snacks, I ate the fruits that they recommended and nuts. I also bought the Glucerin bars.
Mealwise I ate lots of peanut butter sandwiches and eggs and anything that was high in protein.. The key is to stay away from processed foods (like jarred pasta sauce) because they can contain lots of sugar. It is also hit or miss. I would test things out and determine what worked and what didn't. My once a week treat was 1/2 of a McDonalds hot fudge sundae. I could have that for dessert and still stay under 120.
Check out the high risk pregnancy website. There are lots of GD moms to be over there with great food ideas.

Definitely check out the high risk board. It was a great help to me!
I couldn't eat any fruit or many carbs in the morning or it really spiked my sugar. I mostly had eggs and half a low carb english muffin. For snacks, I would have South beach bars, nuts, string cheese, greek yogurt, fruit, crackers with cheese. Basically though, I always had to make sure any carbs were paired with protein.
For meals, I had a lot of salads. Usually just had to make sure I had a lot of veggies, a protein and usually a fruit or something. I was also able to manage a half cup of vanilla ice cream for an evening snack and do ok.
Just make sure you are eating enough. It's not a "diet" as much as just a new eating plan. Snacks are necessary between each meal and before bed to keep your sugars more even. GL!
Im allowed 30-45g of carbs for meals and 15g for snacks.
Breakfast:
Multigrain English Muffin with PB and small glass of milk
or
Eggo waffle with PB with milk
or
Egg, cheese breakfast sandwich on a Bagel thin or Eng. Muffin w Milk
or
Special K Protein PLus cereal with milk and splenda (i throw in ahalf of a banana too sometimes)
( i was having more fruit in the morning too but it was driving up my sugars so the endo told me to cut it out)
Snack:
Hummus and crackers or carrots...greek yogurt (sometimes i crush up some of the protein cereal and put it in), apple with peanut butter, string cheese and crackers (i like the almond wheatables). 1/2 of Arnold thin with PG, almonds with a hoodsie cups or 1/2 of low sugar ice cream, Slim a Bear ice cream sandwiches (with almonds on the side, i like the 100 cal packs of almonds). You need to pair your carbs with a protein. Also low sugar granola bars.
Lunch
Target thin crust pizzas ( i can eat 2 prety good sized pieces with out it affecting my sugar)
Salads with turkey or chicken
Sandwiches (i was hesitant on the coldcuts but i was told if i heated it in the micro for 20 secs its fine, i put it back in the fridge to cool it back down and you cant even tell)
PB and SUgar free jelly sandwiches with Milk (i drink milk with just about every meals to get the protein and cals in)
Dinner
any type of meat with a veggies with a small potato or 1/2c of rice
I also eat 2 snacks after dinner..one around 1-2am when i get up to pee...i was told this was OK bc my fastings were slightly high and i havent had a high fasting since i started doing this.
I also eat my snack within an hour after i take me 2 hour BS so im eating every 2-3 hours throughtout the day.
Its not so bad, once you find out what you can and cannot have it gets easier. DOnt beat yourself up if you have a few high numbers..its a learning process. I learned real quick i do better with sweets (ice cream) then eating onion rings. So i indulge every once in awhile on a kiddie ice cream and my BS can handle it.
GL!!
