Making baby food in advance or on the spot

Which do you do? Is it smarter to start to make a bunch and freeze or should I wait to see what she likes first? Not sure how to do this... plan to start cereal soon but veggies shortly after... any advice?

Re: Making baby food in advance or on the spot

  • I haven't started baby food yet but I just did a bunch of research for reference. I plan on making a bunch ahead of time and then freezing it. If LO doesn't like it, I will still keep it frozen for a later time just in case his taste buds change.

This is exactly what we're doing. I don't make a ton at first... maybe 2 trays of each kind. We started with 4 bananas and 2 sweet potatoes. I just pureed the bananas alone, and I baked the sweet potatoes and pureed them with a little bit of water. I put 1 tbsp in each cube of an ice cube tray, froze over night, and then put the cubes into ziploc bags and labeled them with the food type and date. I just made carrots and green beans, and just made a small portion of each kind to freeze.

  • Advance. I have a baggie of squash, sweet potatoe, applesauce, bananas and now pears and peaches.

I did buy beans, carrots, and peas once though since the garden isn't ready and I wanted some containers and then peaches and pears since our selection was horrible at the time.

ETA: It can take your LO 10-15 times of eating something before they make their decision if they like it or not.

  • I made and froze in advance. I also have pre made Gerber organics of carrots, peas, and green beans. Those were the only foods the pedi really didn't want me making at home. Peas due to the skins being hard to strain thin enough. Green beans because of the hard time with skins and seeds. Carrots due to the nitrates.

  • I bought the littlest jars, one of each kind (Babyganic).  I am trying them one at a time.  Whatever he likes I will make myself & freeze.  I don't want to have a freezer full of food he hates.  We gave him prune & he cried with the first spoonful... so I'm glad I only had bought a tiny jar of that!

We are offering veggies first since fruits taste better & I'm afraid he won't want veggies if he's tried fruits first.

If you give banana & avocado there is no prep needed.  We are trying those next week!
