Food Allergy

Have we talked about "I'm Allergic to Everything" yet?

A good friend suggested I watch this:

It depressed me a little to see a 15 year old who is still getting 90% of his nutrients from formula.  I secretly fear this will be my son : (

I honestly wasn't so excited about it and i think for those that don't understand food allergies might now think that you can't really die from it, just be in pain.  I was hoping they were going to have someone on that has sever allergies to maybe 4 foods and what he/she has to do to avoid and a little lecture on why it should be avoided -instead of eating Chinese food.

I loved the guy portion where he had the formula.  It really showed an allergy not many people know about but also shows how an "athlete" can still do what he loves to do even though he eats only a few foods.

  • I just watched it last night and I thought it was different.  I agree with magdusia that I wanted it to be more of a "typical allergic person" (whatever that is) with a few serious allergies to show how it alters your life.  I thought the less common allergy situations were interesting, but not enough was explained about them.  The food trials were not taken seriously.  I don't know.  I also felt like they left it very optimistic about more foods in the future and I don't know if that is a reality.  I know it isn't for many.  The formula part was sad, but also impressive with his sports and stuff.

  • I liked it.  But maybe that is because my son has the same thing as Zeke.  Zekes case didn't appear to be a super severe case.  We were told that we could realistically expect DS to have 5 or 6 safe foods because he has a severe case.  He also did food trials differently than we do them.  DS gets one new food every six weeks and then (if he even makes it that long, most of the time he doesn't) he has a biopsy done to determine if it is a safe food or not.

I am glad they featured EoE, I work a lot towards awareness for these group of disorders and it is a neverending battle.  Most people have heard of 'regular' food allergies.  No one I have ever talked to in real life has heard of EGID's.  I get so many frustrating comments from random people who just don't understand DS condition.  Things like this show help for sure.

  • Yeah I agree with everything you guys have said.  I thought at least in Zeke's case they were doing trials and stuff if a somewhat conventional manner, although very differently than we do them...but that may also be due to age.  It was nice to see a teenager who is on such a limited diet be able to participate in athletics and that gives me some hope.

It would have been nice to see more typical food allergies though.  I know that what my son had is pretty rare, but it manifests like typical, albeit severe ana response.

It would nice to see a program about allergies that highlights how young children deal with them and navigate the school day, daycare, playdates, maybe even summer camp!

I can only imagine how frustrating it is for you when people have no idea what you are going through.  I know for us, everyone (most people) assume that the worst thing that would happen is a rash which is frustrating for us.  Education in general is greatly appreciated.

  • If only I were younger and more in the MTV demographic... I'd totally do a show on how it alters your life when you are allergic to so many things.
