TTC and thinking about changing jobs

I have seen posts on this before but none lately and I feel like I just have to get this out! I wonder if any of you ladies are going through this. So GH just started TTC 2 months ago... we know this could take a while. I just started my Masters for Social work and I found out from a class mate of a company hiring that doesnt require a lot of experience. This could be great for me... but I have reservations about leaving my current stable job knowing I could get KU at any time. This job is actually in children services... so one thought is how could they give me issues about needing time off for DR apts and maternity leave (unpaid of course that would be fine). But at the same time I know everyone is facing budget cuts... so its a thin line... any ideas advice or just support please and thank you

I think only you know if the job change is right for you and your family, but my word of caution is to check on the maternity leave policy at the new job (if there is one) and whether the employer has to provide you with FMLA (has to do with # of employees).  My husband and I were TTGP, then I changed jobs (which was a great choice in the long run), so we had to pause for about 6 months so that once we got pregnant and had the kid, I would be fully eligible for maternity leave and FMLA.

If TTC would put your job or a potential job at risk, it might be a good idea to wait a little while. If it would just make things difficult and you're willing to go through that, then keep on with what you're doing. They can't fire you for being pregnant/using personal or sick time but that doesn't mean that they can't fire you if you aren't handling your responsibilities while pregnant (no that I think this will happen to you). Just talk to your H about it and whatever y'all are the most comfortable with is the right decision for your family at this time.

I'm going through something similar.  We TTC for a few months but had to put it on hold in order to relocate for DH's work.  This meant I've also had to start a new job and now have to wait until September until we can start TTC again. (I live in the UK and to get maternity pay you have to have been in the job for at least three months to qualify.)  It's frustrating, but both of our new jobs are better paid and now we're closer to friends and have a better support network when we do have a baby. 

I don't really have an answer for you but wish you lots of luck.  It's a hard decision and I'm sure you'll make the one that's best for you.

I think I might just hold off where I am now. Gosh it sucks. All I can do is hope TTC doesnt take a year! I like my job now but its totally unrealated to Social Work, so it would be nice to get some experience now so once I have my masters I can get advance a little.

I would hesitate to leave a stable job during the TTC process; however you can not plan your life around a pregnancy that might happen. You have to do what's best for you and your H right now in the present. GL & HTH

So many people I know are in this predicament, and there is no right answer, but I would think carefully about leaving a stable job right now... I know it's really tough to let go of a great opportunity though.... Good luck with this!

This is such a personal decision, I wish you luck with whatever you decide!

If it were me, I would probably apply for the new job and learn about the maternity leave policies, work/life balance etc. and make the decision once the job is offered to you.  If you think the job would be awesome and a great use of your degree, you could think about putting TTC off for a few months until you'd be eligible for FMLA/maternity leave.  I'd worry that either a year would go by, I'd be in the same job and still not pregnant. Or if I did get pregnant easily, I'd never feel secure enough to leave a good job for another, potentially more rewarding one when I have a child that depends on me.
