GD question

Hello,

So I have been watching the this board for a while but have never posted. I am due 9/13 with my 3rd baby. With all 3 I have had GD. The 1st was diet controlled, 2nd on insulin and with this one I am on Glyburide twice a day. I went in for my monthly sono and the baby is in the 81st percentile. Last month she was in the 67th. The problem is my numbers have been really good. I even have some lows (normal for me). The doctor says since I will be having a C-section (because i had one in the past) the size doesn't really matter. However, I am really worried. My daughter was 8lbs.10oz and had a very hard time controlling her blood sugar for the 1st 24 hours.  I am kind of at a loss as to what to do. I guess I could go carb free and try to keep my numbers in the 80-90s but that seems really hard.  I guess I am just feeling guilty. I am trying, my numbers are great and my baby is still having problems.

Anyone else had good numbers but the baby is measuring very large.

Oh the doctor also said he could admit me to the hospital 24-48 hours before the c-section and they will keep a very tight control of my sugar  levels which might help this baby after the birth.

Re: GD question

  • I had great numbers except for two high readings ( in the 130s Xmas Day and NYE night, go figure).  Didn't do a growth u/s, but DD was 8 lb. 11 oz. and she didn't have any problems b/c her size wasn't b/c of GD.  I only had to go through GD once, so I can't speak of how mentally exhausting it must be to go through it 3 times, but I did keep a really strict diet for the baby's sake and b/c I wanted a VBAC.

  • I wouldn't recommend going carb-free, because both the baby and you need carbs.  I would recommend exercising (low intensity for 20-30 minutes) after each meal.  That will help bring down your blood sugar.  Although, you say your levels are fine.  Maybe the ultrasound measurement was off and your baby is actually not that big.

  • If your levels are within the range your doctor wants, there isn't much else you can do. Do not go carb free - as rainlily said, you and the baby need carbs. Remember u/s measurements can be off quite a bit. It sounds like your doctor is willing to work out a plan to try to help your baby's sugars be normal at birth, so just stick with what your doing and hang in there. GL!
