Austin Babies

Realistically how long will I use the Moby?

Remember that I have a bad back.  DD weighs 18 pounds (yep, she's tons o' fun) and it feels pretty good still.

I ask because right now I am borrowing mslaquinta's but I just saw one in Sienna (gorgeous burnt orange) and I might NEED it.

  • If it's still feeling good and her weight gain is gradual and your back can support her gradual weight gain then you should be good for at least another 6-12 months.

Jack is 25lbs and I know I don't have the same back problems as you do but I can still carry him in ours.

  • So you can use the Moby longer than just the newborn/small infant stage?  Interesting...I thought it was just for the really early stages.  Good to know, not that that helps you answer your question or anything.  :)

    I don't know, but I sent you a PM :)
  • We stopped using the Moby around the time DD hit 20 lbs in favor of a more structured carrier. I felt like with her weight and wiggle-factor, the stretchy material of the Moby didn't stay tied tight/secure while I wore her. I'd wrap her up all snug-like, and after an hour the material would stretch and she'd sag. Not comfy. I made myself a mei tai that I LOVE but had DH agreed with the expense, I'd have purchased a Beco or Ergo in a heartbeat.

    Yep.

I <3 my Ergo.  It puts most of the weight on your hips instead of back & shoulders.

  • I'm still using my Moby and DS #2 is around 19, 20 lbs.

    :-)

  • I love my Boba - I think they are cuter to look at than the Ergo. The Boba 2G is what I have and works for 15-45lbs. (Plus they are way cheaper than the Ergo.)

  • DD is 17 lbs and while I can still use the moby, I prefer our Beco Gemini and Ergo. I can wear her comfortably much longer.  plus they are so much easier to put on. We use the beco the most because DD likes to face out.  I think technically the moby goes up to 35 lbs...at least thats what the website says.  I honestly cant imagine using it that long!  I totally understand needing the beautiful orange one.  I  think I need the new petunia picklebottom ergo, so cute!

  • I have that one, and it IS gorgeous. By the time LO was your daughter's age, I wasn't using the Moby anymore. It was too hot in the summer for the thick material, and it was difficult to get it tight enough with that stretchy material. We retired the Moby & moved to a linen ring sling in a beautiful burnt orange color. It was perfect for the rest of the year.

  • We stopped using our Moby around 4 months. We have been using our Become Gemini ever since and I love it!

  • I usually only recommend it til 15lbs or so, especially for someone with a bad back.  Do yourself a favor and try another carrier.  If you like the wrapping aspect of the Moby then you may love a woven wrap - you can do all the same holds as Moby plus back carries.  Mei tais and SSC's can also be good options for those with back problems, but a lot of people have to try a few different styles out before they find "the one".

I've actually organized a meeting for the Austin Babywearer's at Baby Earth on the second Saturday in July at 10am.  I'll be giving a quick lesson (think Babywearing 101) followed by a Q&A and our normal group get together.  If you're interested in trying out new carriers we'll have our lending library available and some very knowledgeable people to help!
