soy formula

anyone use soy and see a difference if you have babies that spit up...thinking of trying but not sure if i should try prosobee or isomil...i hear it can make them constipated but i'm soooooo completely tired of the spitting up.....DS1 spit up all over my friends white shirt yesterday...no one wants to hold them anymore!!! ugghhh

Re: soy formula

  • google and research- there are very few reasons a baby should be on soy... and there are some who think it can be a problem b/c soy can act like estrogen in the body of children.

babies spit up... a formula won't stop it - even kids with reflux don't stop spitting up when treated - they just don't have the acid in it to bother them anymore when they are on meds or special formula.... but babies will spit up until they are bigger, sitting/standing up more, etc.  You just have to expect it and be prepared.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • Their dr suggested trying Isomil.  Carson was on it 3 weeks and I took him off.  He was constipated and I just didnt see the point. Of course every baby is different, but we just tried to to see and it was pointless.

  • Soy won't stop spitting up.

But given that your kids are 6 months old already - have you started solids?  Are they sitting up yet?

  • Actually, one of my sons did do better on soy.  For months we were preparing soy for him, regular for my other son.  What fun.  I figured it was worth a shot, and I planned to use it for as little time as necessary...  I weaned him back onto regular sensitive (Similac) when he was about 6-7 months old.  He seemed to have grown out of his issues by then.

You might also look into Zantac (it's prescription for babies, call your doctor).  Was also very helpful.

  • Spitting up got so much better once my boys could sit independently.  Have you tried having them sitting in a bumbo seat after their bottle?

There are medicines that can help, but my doctor wouldn't prescribe them unless the babies were experiencing pain with the spitting up.

ETA:  I've heard good things about probiotics and digestion problems with babies.  Maybe check with you doctor or even a pharmacist and give those a try.

  • One of my girls had a milk sensitivity, but she was throwing up/ie projectile vomiting.  Our pedi recommended trying soy before moving on to a hypoallergenic formula.  It did constipate her, but it was nothing that 5ml of pear juice, twice a day couldn't handle.

I did ask about the estrogen production to both our pedi and my other DD's pedi GI.  They both said that the studies are showing a slight increase when used long term in kids who are lactose intolerant, or have a more severe sensitivity, lasting past the first birthday.  They also said that the increase was not proven to cause any long term health risks.  Both of them agreed that if this were to become the case, we should switch her to a hypoallergenic formula.  Fortunately she did just fine with whole milk at a year.

After saying all of this though, I will tell you that if your DS is just spitting up vs actually vomiting, soy formula may not help at all.  Thickening can be helpful with spit up, along with elevating during and after feeds, and while sleeping.  GL!

  • My daughter was on regular similac advantage when she was born and she was sooo colicy and had projectile vomiting/spit up from then til about one-two months. Doctor suggested another expensive formula and than didn't work either. When we switched her to soy. She did not do more than the occasional spit up which is normal and lessened her colic. They told us she was allergic/sensitive to the other formulas.    It was the same story for my nephew and my husband when they were babies...     Never hurts to try... if it is just spit up it is going to happen no matter what type of formula or breast milk is used

  • I'm not a fan of soy all together.

DS's spit up was out of hand... when I switched him to Similac Sensitive SpitUp, it helped tremendously!  He used it for a couple of months, and just 2 wks I go he's back on Similac Organic with his brother.
