Recommend your Detergent

I have read about it and I am sure it's personal preference, availability and price...but which do you use and why?

Also can you use Dreft for CDs or is that a total no- no.  Can you use it for the prefolds?  I haven't done any pre-washing until I have finished building my stash.  Baby is due August 20th.

One more thing: how many times do you prewash for prefolds, fitteds, aios, and pockets?  The BG 3.0s I got from cottonbabies came with a card that said to wash them 7-8 times, really?!

Re: Recommend your Detergent

  • Dreft can't be used because it will cause build up, which will cause repelling. We use tide original powder. Some say it's s no no, but we have really hard water and the cd safe detergents weren't getting our dipes clean. As far as prepping, your synthetic fibers will only need to be washed once, separate from natural fibers. Your natural fibers, like organic cotton, hemp will need 7-8 washes to be fully prepped. You can boil your prefolds to speed up the prepping.

  • I use Rockin Green. A friend highly recommended it, and I've used it with no problems. Every so often I do a RnG soak to keep everything clean and running smoothly.

Dreft is a no-no. See the pinstripesandpolkadots.com site for detergent recs and ones to avoid, and why.

Prepping doesn't vary based on type of diaper, it's dependent on fiber type. Natural fibers need several (3-6) wash/dry cycles. If it doesn't have PUL (eg, prefolds) you can substitute a 20 minute boil, then a wash/dry cycle.

You CAN use diapers before the 7-8 wash cycles, but they're not as absorbent and more likely to leak.
