Multiples

Getting twins on same schedule.

Hi there!  I was wondering if you can answer my friend's question.  She had twins about 2 weeks ago and this is her FB status last night:

"A question for you parents of multiples... Did you get your newborns on the same schedule? If yes how ling did it take to get them together? Just curious to compare and any tips are greatly appreciated!"

Thanks!

Re: Getting twins on same schedule.

  • The only way to get them on the same schedule is to make sure and get them up at the same time (day and night) for feedings. We've been successfull with this by getting the other up when only one wakes and putting both down for naps and bedtime at the same time. It will take a little while to get an actual schedule, it took us about 5 weeks before they started getting on anything resembling a schedule and we are still working on making it better

  • Agree with pp. If you feed them at the same time they will end up wanting to sleep at the same time. Next time one wants to eat - offer the other one to eat at the same time.

  • Yep - agree with PP.  We lived by the "one up, both up" rule.  If one woke up to eat, we woke the other to eat.  We did this from Day 1 and the girls have always been on the same schedule.

  • Yes, they definitely need to eat at the same time to keep them on the same schedule; even if it means waking the other one up. My twins always eat at the same time every day. They do not always nap at the same time during the day, but both sleep at night. I started this right away and it has worked out really well.

  • :::waves hi!:::::

    If they are that young, then def ditto the "one up, both up" rule.  It's the multiples caveat to the "never wake a sleeping baby" rule.

    When they got older, I would let them sleep and wake as they pleased.  But in the morning, it was one up both up so we can start our 3 hour rotations.

  • I ditto PP's  as how to get them on the same schedule...

    but as for me and what works best for us mines schedule is 45 minutes to 1 hour apart  because Im the sole caregiver during the day while SO is at work and feeding and burping 2 hungry crying babies at the same time is just too much

    so that gives me enough time to change the diaper, feed, burp and bond with them one on one before the other one wakes up
