When DH and I went to a local store to personally check out some CDs, we were told by the sales lady that bringing a new baby home AND trying to CD right away might be too overwhelming. She recommended using disposables for the first several weeks until we had our "routine" down and then easing into CDs. She also mentioned that a newborn likely would have more leaks and a harder time fitting into the CDs because they are so small.
We are looking into buying one size diapers, BUT... would you say it is worth it to just purchase a stash for newborns too (since I'd assume there is some truth to a sizing problem with a newborn in a one-size diaper)? What kind of newborn diapers have you found to work best for you? Do ALL newborn diapers need a cover as well as the diaper/prefold? When was your baby able to fit into a one-size diaper?
Thanks in advance ladies!
Re: Newborn CD Question...
I always kind of chuckle when people say a newborn plus cloth diapers would be too overwhelming. The only difference is you're going to wash yours instead of throwing them away.....so I say go for it! We did and honestly it just became part of the routine, no learning curve.
As for what kinds of diapers. You are correct that OS diapers won't fit a newborn. Most say when they hit 10-12 pounds. We could use ours right around 1 month and were in them full time by 6 weeks.
If you want to CD from day 1 you will need a newborn stash. We had a mix of fitteds (which needed a cover) and All in Ones (which don't). Prefolds are going to be the cheapest route, but will be the "hardest" in terms of having to fold them onto baby. AIOs will be the most like disposables, but the most expensive. One thing to keep in mind is NB diapers have great resale value so even though it seems like a lot of money for such a short time, you can usually get at least half, if not more of your investment back.

Thanks so much! We got 3 boxes of Huggies Organic Newborn disposables at a shower (72 count each) and I looked at Target... that was like $65! I just can't help but to think that it might be worth it to just buy a newborn stash and be done with it. It gives me anxiety to think about paying for stuff I'm going to throw away lol.
How many diapers (assuming we don't go the prefold route... ) would you say is good for a newborn stash?
Did you return the disposables? I ask because that many NB diapers, if you plan to use them, might just last you until your LO fits into the one-size diapers. For full-time CDing a NB you'll probably want 36 diapers in your rotation. If you are planning to use the disposables that you got at the shower too, then you could get away with 20 diapers probably. We did part-time CD when DS was a NB, because we got tons of disposables at the shower, and had 24 prefolds in rotation. Those 24 prefolds were more than enough for part-time.
I must say that one-size diapers are awesome now but I really preferred the prefolds for the newborn stage. We used the disposables at night and when I was just too tired to do the slightly extra work of putting on a CD. Let's face it, there were times I was so exhausted in the first weeks that I could barely get the disposable on correctly.
)
i'm kind of half and half with disposables and cd's right now with my nb
she's 8 days old, and when she was born, she was 6lbs 6oz. however due to the weight loss after birth, she was down to 5lbs 10oz by the time we brought her home
i used up the pack of disposables we got from the hospital and i'm about to finish up the other pack that i bought.
all i have for my stash right now is 12 grovia nb aio's which fit her great. i have a dozen gmd prefolds, but they're one size up from nb. i bought them thinking she'd be around 7lbs, a guesstimate from my previous 3 kids... but turned out she's the smallest baby i've ever had lol
i would definitely agree that you need 3 dozen cd's of whatever type you choose.
if i knew she was going to be this small, i would've gotten the following:
1 dozen grovia nb aio's
1 dozen gmd workhorses
1 dozen gmd nb sized prefolds
so in the meantime, i'm just going to use the heck out of my aio's and some disposables until she gets bigger
i can also say, that no, it's not overwhelming to cd a newborn. the only overwhelming thing i could think of would be if you're having laundry/stink issues. which i don't since i've been cd'ing dd1 for over a year now. i even had a c section and have been able to do cd laundry a couple times so far.
I wouldn't return the disposables, yet. We started cloth on the way home from the hospital and haven't looked back - but LO will be 6 weeks Tuesday and isn't even at 9lbs yet, so OS diapers aren't going to fit for some time. We've used disposables a few times - mainly when we took a 4 day trip and weren't able to wash CDs during the trip (used them for the day before and the first 2 days, then started back in cloth to wash when we got home).
Also - my OS diapers don't fit and LO is going to be at the sitters for 2 days this weekend, so we will be taking the sposies to her to use. She's totally willing to do cloth, but I thought it would be a nice gesture. We were given a box of 172+ huggies and 50+ Luvs size 1 - and I also have a good size package of size 2s. They are also good if LO has a rash or detergent reaction - you can use them until you figure it out.
FWIW we haven't had any rashes, but you never know.
We've used CDs since the very beginning. That is, from the moment he was born since we had a homebirth.
I loved having CD laundry to do in the early days. Doing diaper laundry every other day was probably the only consistent routine I had in the first few weeks. Everything else fell to the wayside in the haze of new parenthood (and our constant nursing and weight gain issues). For me, having the small amount of routine was wonderful. I honestly think it helped keep me sane during that time of great change.
Let's be honest...it's not hard to do a load of laundry. So I'm not sure why people think that is going to be the difficult part of having a baby.
Generally one-size don't fit newborns very well. We used PFs (cheapie ones that a renter left behind as even the orange edge GMD were too big on him) and covers. They were absolutely great. The covers were Bummis and Proraps and Thirsties. If you are looking for cheap, fo with Proraps for the NB stage or Thirsties Duo Wraps.
Also, PFs are still our go to diapers!
We started cloth as soon as we got home from the hospital.
It wasn't overwhelming. There's a lot of baby poo no matter what you do. I can't believe a sales person would talk you OUT of buying a nb stash.
My nb stash is: 26 GMD infant prefolds, 3 bummis super whisper wraps in XS an 3 in S, 3 thirsties duos size 1, and then 5 AIOs in small (we found some random Mum's Bums brand). I also have a couple dozen newborn prefolds - we used them a bit, but could have done without.
It's worth it to me because I bought used (that cost ~ $175), want another baby (so will use the stash twice), and will sell it off when we're done.

Cloth Diaper Review Sheet
We started CDing in the hospital (no learning curve at all, so we highly recommend it). We have 10 KL0s, 1 xs thirsties fab fitted (wish we had more of these), 8 various xs WAHM fitteds, 6 small gDiapers with cloth inserts, 2 xs thirsties covers, 2 thirsties duos size 1 and 6 xs BG AIOs. The BG xs only fit for the first 3 weeks, then he would pee out of them.
If I could do it over I would get 8 KL0s, 8 xs thirsties fab fitteds, 2 xs thirsties covers, 2 thirsties duos size 1, 6 small gDiapers and 12 xs BG AIOs.
