Trying to Get Pregnant

Nausea from PNV?

Does anyone else have this issue? Every time I take my prenatals I get nauseous and feel like throwing up. Not sure if it's the brand or my body? I take the Women's one a day with DHA. Any recommendations for others?

Re: Nausea from PNV?

  • Ive heard some reviews about the womens one a day causing nausea and side effects. I use the target brand and have no problems whats so ever. I got target brand for  $4.00. Maybe try those.

  • I've seen a lot of posts like yours of women saying their PNV made them feel sick. I have no idea why that would be- it's really weird. Are yours large swallow vitamins? Are they sticking in your throat and giving you a bad taste or making you gag or do you not notice nausea until later?

I take target gummy ones, mostly because I hate swallowing large pills and I've felt fine with them. They aren't great tasting but I've seen them recommended on here and I haven't noticed a problem. Good luck!

  • I've found a lot of the ones with DHA (usually from concentrated fish oil) give me headaches and/or nausea. I now use the Rainbow light prenatals, its better on the stomach (and my head.) I don't know if its the fact its a lot of plant based sources or that it has some ginger in it to settle stomachs but it seems to be pretty good for me. Good luck!

  • thanks girls, do the target and rainbow light ones have DHA too, or do you have to buy those separate?

And now it has nothing to do with sticking in my throat, I usually start to notice it 5-10 minutes later.

  • I definitely do, and I'm even taking one others have said are "easy on the stomach." The best thing I can recommend is taking it with something more substantial like yogurt.  It has really helped me that just with cereal and milk in the AM.

The ones I take don't necessarily make me feel nauseous but are just hard on my stomach. I found I couldn't bring myself to take them earlier in the day so I switched to taking them right before bed and it's working out much better for me. Maybe it's because I have more in my stomach by that point or I sleep through the "icky" feeling but either way it makes taking them much easier for me.

  • That's definitely not uncommon.  I can't take any prenatals.  I've tried several different brands, taking them at different times of the day, with food, everything... I was getting so nauseous I was waking up vomitting in the middle of the night.  Not fun.  My doctor finally suggested I take a simple children's Flintstone vitamin (!!) with a folic acid supplement.  No problems with that combo so far.

  • Yes I had the same problem and the Doctor told me it was common and gave me sample packs of several different kinds and told me to pick one that worked for me and tell him so he could call in a prescrption.  I would go to your dr and ask for samples or try another brand are bodies all react a different way.  Plus make sure you eat before you take them.

  • I got some that are called "prenatal petites" from Whole Foods.  Instead of one big pill, its 3 little pills.  Instead of taking them all at once, I take them spaced throughout the day, 1 with each meal.  Works for the nausea for me!

  • They were making me sick when I tried taking them with breakfast, so I switched to taking them just after dinner and it's been a lot better.

I'm taking the Target brand because they're super cheap, but now I want to go find a gummy variety! Neat!

I take mine with dinner and I feel MUCH better than when I take them any earlier.  I think just trying different brands and taking them at different times of the day will help you feel better :)

I would recommend this too! When I was pregnant with DD #2 I couldn't take any PNV without getting sick. I took 2 flinstones a day per docs orders. Hope this helps.

  • I'm actually quite surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but I had heard about nausea and PNV too, so I just googled it.  Apparently, the iron in the PNVs is hard of the stomach and its suggested to find a vitamin with lower iron levels...and to talk to your doctor.  Hope you find something that works for you.

This. I took them a few times right when I woke up and didn't eat until I got to work. Now I take them after dinner. No problems.
