Nebulizer not working?

When Rye gets any type of runny nose. The very next day/in the night he starts wheezing to the point we have to take him to the Dr. or the ER. (usually get sent to the ER by his Dr)

this last time, on mother day, he was admitted. We got a home nebulizer finally, since that has worked at the ER and we we were sent home 18 hours later.

he is having an "episode" now and we are at 3 nebulizer treatments in 6 hours with no effect. He has a bit more energy for about 10 minutes after, but his little chest and tummy are still working the wheeze like crazy.

how much nebulizer is to much? We've also been doing relief inhalers too. I am thinking another ER visit is in our future tonight. He is so lethargic. Poor guy. I'm just puzzled that it's not working like it usually does. And he only got the runny nose last night! It comes on so quickly.

So to those who nebulize....how much is to much?

Re: Nebulizer not working?

  • If he is wheezing due to allergies (high pollen count in the last couple of days?) he may need a different type of medicine to help.

  • I have no clue, but if you do go in, you could take his nebulizer with and have them check it out.

  • I dont remember M's doc telling us a certain number is a limit.  Has he seen an allergiest?  Since we took M to one he hasn't had any episodes and is on one allergy med, so much better.  Hope you all get some sleep tonight, and no trip to the ER is necessary.

  • We were told 1 every 4hrs.

  • whats he getting?   Gabe does Albuterol, and when bad, we add pulmicort (steroid)   he might need different meds.  Look to see if he's contracting when he breaths...  might be time to bring him back in  :(

  • I think we were told once ever 3-4 hours, but I'd guess it would tell you on the albuterol ( if that's what he's using). I always felt like it took a couple treatments before it actually started to work. I usually bring ella in the shower with me for as long as she'll last when it gets bad and that usually helps too! Hope you didn't end up in the er and that he's doing better today!

  • He has the albuterol (sp?. When we go to the ER, they do that plus the steroid. I think we now need that steroid at home for when it gets bad. He takes a 2x a day inhaled steroid, but it's for prevention...won't do anything now.

I did take him to the ER. His lungs and the wheezing and responded well to the combo with the steroid. At 1:30am, the Dr said his o2 sats were lower than he'd like, but, he asked if I felt comfortable taking him home to sleep. With our history there, he saw i've been right on every other time bringing him in when he needs it, so he gave me a choice to stay overnight or go home. I chose to go home.

he was officially diagnosed with Asthma this time however. They wouldn't diagnose before.

he is still wheezing like crazy today. Cranky too. Waaay more than normal. I hope the steroid prescription will help in addition to the nebulizer.
