Splitting up vaccines... please advise

My 6 week old is going in for her first round of vaccines in a few days, and I have been advised by many of my friends that we should have her vaccines split up so that she is not administered multiple vaccines at once.

Does anyone have experience or strong opinions on the pros/cons of the vaccine schedule? Or does anyone have any good links to resources online that discuss the matter and/or give an alternate vaccine schedule? TIA

  • I'm sorry, I can't help. We vaccinate on schedule. I LOVE your DD's romper though!

ETA: I think Dr Sears has an alternate schedule, you might try googling that. :)

  • It's a hotly debated idea. Personally, I don't think the research available on delayed schedules is all that convincing, so we are following the guidelines set forth by the AAP and AMA.

If you don't mind extra doc appointments and your pedi is okay with it, I don't think it's a big deal or anything. I just don't see the point. She had her two month vaccines a week or so ago, and she was cranky afterwards but fine. She never even ran a temp.

I read Dr. Sears' book and I'm so glad I did just to understand all the vaccines better. DD already had her 2 month vaccines and we did split them up. She had such a bad reaction with the first 3 vaccines that her pedi wants to split the 4 month vaccines even more. She's going to get just the DTaP by itself because the pedi said that's probably the one she reacted too. Most moms are very against splitting vaccines but if my husband, myself, and her doctor all feel like that's what's best for her, that's what we're going to do.
  • While pregnant, I read Dr. Sear's "The Vaccine Book."  Here is an excerpt I found online about it...

"With THE VACCINE BOOK, parents finally have one, fair, impartial, fact-based resource they can turn to for answers. Each chapter is devoted to a disease/vaccine pair and offer a comprehensive discussion of what the disease is, how common or rare it is, how serious or harmless it is, the ingredients of the vaccine, and any possible side effects from the vaccine. Ultimately, parents will have to make their own informed decisions as Dr. Bob Sears is neither pro-vaccine nor anti-vaccine. But THE VACCINE BOOK will provide exactly the information parents want and need as they make their way through the vaccination maze."

I thought the book was very informative and helpful.  My daughter will be receiving all of the vaccinations currently recommended by the CDC, just on a delayed schedule.  I suggest checking this book out if you are at all curious about alternative vaccination schedules.  Hope this helps!

  • This website gives you an outline of both vaccination schedules. One by the CDC and the other by Dr. Sears. I'm also going to split up the vaccines.

  • Great question and thank you for all the resources ladies! After the way our LO re-acted to his shots this past week I am calling the pedi tomorrow to discuss splitting the shots up...even if it means and extra visit and co-pay. Its just not worth it for LO to be so miserable again!
