would you mind sharing how much you pay, what hours LO is there, and what does that include: food, diapers, etc? I am thinking of doing this when we move and get into a bigger home, but wanted to see what the going rate is. I have no experience with in-home, but I do have a B.A. and M.A. in elementary ed and a 19 month old.

TIA!
Re: If LO goes to In-home daycare...
this too!
I do in-home childcare. I taught elementary school for 5 years and then decided to do this after I had C. ( I actually went back to work from December til the end of the school year and it just wasn't for me.)
I only watch children of teachers full time. Which means that I do not have to work full time over the summer! But it also means that I take a huge hit to my income over the summer.
I changed my policy a little bit for this coming school year, since I am keeping all the kids I had last year and everyone teaches in the same school district and is on the same schedule. When I first started I was open every day except for major holidays and also had my hours set at 7-5 everyday. If I was closed, they didn't have to pay me and I also gave them a week of vacation where they didn't have to pay.
For this year, my hours are 7-5 T and TH and 7-4 MWF. I am only open when teachers have to be at work. If they have the day off, so do I. I charge $165 per week and they pay me for every day during the school year, except there are 5 holidays which I do not require payment for. I do not require them to pay me over the summer or bring their kids. If they want to bring them over the summer, they just pay for that day.
I provide food once they are eating all table food. I serve balanced meals that consist of many organic and/or natural foods. They provide diapers and wipes. We have a consistent routine that consists of art projects, outside/gross motor activities, and read alouds daily.
The only other thing I would mention is that this job is HARD work! It is physically challenging to be on your feet all day, lifting children, getting up and down off the floor, etc. And the amount of time I spend cleaning our house, grocery shopping, prepping food, looking up activities and ideas online... I spend a lot of time working even when I am not. Then if someone gets sick, all the toy cleaning and sanitizing that goes on over here is ridiculous!
I love what I do and I am so happy that I am able to do it. Taking care of children can be very challenging. Sometimes it is so LOUD over here! But I always remember that nap time is just around the corner!
And it is a very rewarding job. I love that I get to be a third parent to these children and they are really just like family. And my DD loves having her friends over to play everyday. I feel like with the situation I am in with watching teacher's kids, I get the best balance of working and also family time. And it has been so beneficial for my DD too - I don't think I would have taken as much time to stop and play with her, if I wasn't getting paid to do it.
Sorry this is so long! You can page me or find me on FB if you have any questions! GL! I love seeing other elementary teachers start doing this, it is really nice to have so much knowledge and experience with child development when you are caring for so many children!
