Anyone do placenta encapsulation?

Hey, all! Someone posted about this on a board and I'm curious about the capsules...anyone take these? Thoughts, opinions? Thanks so much!

Re: Anyone do placenta encapsulation?

  • I haven't, but I have a few friends who have and they definitely recommend it.  They said it helped with all sorts of things, including ppd and pp bleeding.  I feel like I should do it, b/c I bled so much the first time but I just can't get over the idea of it.

  • I did it, and I am thoroughly convinced that it helped. I was willing to do it and say "hey, even if it's a placebo effect, I'll take that over PPD any day of the week." They worked. In spite of my history putting me at super high risk for PPD or PPP, I was fine. Tired, in a fog, all that good stuff, but not depressed. In addition, shortly after weaning off them, I wound up with a nasty case of PPD that I'm convinced was held at bay by the placenta capsules. It's really unusual for that to happen, so please don't take my experience as the norm (In addition to my high PPD/PPP risk, I had post-birthing family trauma that set off my anxiety and PTSD, so I'm honestly amazed that I went as long as I did without crashing). It's why I'm completely convinced that they worked, even if it was just a placebo effect.

If you haven't already, check out the PlacentaBenefits website for lots more information--I believe there's a search function too so that you can find someone in your area who does it.

  • I've been wondering what this is and keep hearing tidbits about it.  I had PPD and severe PPA with DS and might want to consider this because I CANT go through that again.  It was misery and I want to enjoy the NB stage this time around.  Can this be done after a C/S as well?  I can't see my doctor being into this sort of thing but I will ask her about it at my next appointment.

  • I'm so glad I did it.. seriously.. I would have been on some hard drugs [meds] if I hadn't had the placenta capsules. Worth every penny, even though I didn't take them all. [I had a HUGE placenta, apparently.]

I had a c/s and had it done. I just looked for a doula in the area that did this and because we couldn't afford a doula, we just asked her if she'd do the placenta encapsulation for us. We just brought a cooler to the hospital with us and told the docs that we're keeping the placenta. They made us sign a paper and gave it to us in a tupperware-like container, then we called her and she came to pick it up, and delivered the capsules to me in the hospital about a day and a half later.

  • Regulations as to whether they're legally required to give you your placenta vary state by state. You'll have to sign a form, and chances are very good that you can't have someone else carry it out, you or your husband will have to give it to the person who encapsulates it off of hospital property. Huh?
