pyloric stenosis (edit: update)

So, I found a lump on my baby's abdomen and I think that he may have pyloric stenosis.  He is 3 weeks and 1 day old and has been vomiting (more volume than spit up) progressively more over the last few days.  We are going to the doctor this afternoon, but I am freaking out.  I made the mistake of Googling and it looks like it is 100% treatable but it requires surgery.  Thinking about my baby having surgery, coupled with my crazy hormones, is making me a wreck.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Can someone tell me I am being paranoid?

UPDATE:  We went to the doctor and the lump I was worried about isn't related to pyloric stenosis.  It is just that his muscles haven't fully closed and should repair on its own.  The doctor couldn't rule out pyloric stenosis, but we have a plan.  We are going to monitor the vomiting/digestion issues for another week.  If there isn't any improvement, or things get worse, he will go to the hospital for an upper GI test (Barium swallow).  If things get better, we'll continue to monitor and assume all is well.  I love my pediatrician and am feeling a lot better!

Re: pyloric stenosis (edit: update)

  • Has he been gaining weight? The lump and vomiting does sound suspicious.. usually they vomit after every feeding as well. If the doctor thinks he may have it they will do an ultrasound to confirm where they will feed the baby water and watch on the screen to see if the pylorus opens or not.

I know it is scary but it is treatable and the surgery is an "easy" one.

    Good luck!

  • My little brother had this when he was a baby. There is 8 years difference between us so I remember a good chunk of it. He would eat and then literally projectile vomit. He vomited every time he ate. At around two months he had surgery for it and did great after that. I also have a cousin who just had their second child and the baby just kept vomitting. They did the upper gi on him and found that he had gerd and they had to slow down his eating. For quite a while he only ate an ounce to an ounce and a half at every feeding up until I believe he was around 6 or 7 months old. Good luck with everything.
