Trying to Get Pregnant

Allergy med Question?

I am currently taking a daily allergy pill (generic zyrtec from Walgreens) and have been doing this since early March as I have severe allergies that induce my asthma big time. My primary care doctor has me taking a both the allergy medication and inhaler.

Up until this month I have not noticed any issues with CM.However FF has detected O but I have not noticed any EWCM which of course is concerning. I know that I may have to stop taking my allergy meds (my doctor OK it during pregnancy) in order to clear this up, but before I do is there anything else that might help increase CM while taking these meds? I am already drinking a ton of water a day.

We are not actively TTC until September so I have some time. If I need to stop allergy meds do I do it now. Wait until a month before TTC or just stop with the start of my cycle in September? I ask because I wonder how long it takes for this to correct itself.

Thank you for your help

Re: Allergy med Question?

  • IMO, you don't need to stop until you are actively TTC. Some ladies on here even take allergy meds through their cycles but stop for a few days around their fertile window. If drinking lots of water doesn't help, then I'm not sure that there is much you can do because taking something to increase CM (like Mucinex or EPO) will most likely also increase your other mucus, which defeats the purpose of treating your allergies.

Some ladies will probably tell you to try drinking green tea from CD1 to O, but I am a green tea skeptic. :)

  • I actually just went to my allergist 2 weeks ago and told her that DH and I were TTC. She switched ALL of my allergy meds [I have REALLY bad allergies-I was on allergy shots and everything]. She actually switched me to zyrtec because she said research showed that it was safe for pregnant woman and woman TTC. If I were you I'd check with my doctor to see what they say is best. :) Good luck!
  • I would double check with your dr on this. You wouldnt need to stop taking it now just when you start activly ttc. However, I take Zyrtec and never have any issues with CM. Your dr may have some other suggestions too besides green tea.

  • I take Zyrtec and my doc says this is safe while TTC and while actually pregnant.  I also take a nasal spray, called Rhinoquort Aqua (not sure about the spelling) and this is also safe while TTC/pregnant.  My doc's wife is pregnant and she takes these meds as well so I felt comfortable with his recommendation that they were safe.  You may check to see if that nasal spray would be better for CM than the Zyrtec, and if so, if that would cover your symptoms so you wouldn't be so miserable!  GL!

  • I use zyrtec and flonase. I very rarely have any EWCM no matter what I am taking, but I do stop by zyrtec a few days before I expect to O, and try to hold on until after I confirm O before I start again...don't always make it though.

I did try mucinex this cycle. I didn't see much change in CM.

  • I know the allergy medication that I am on is safe to use, I took it while I was pregnant with my daughter, however not before. Since I have at least two more cycles before we actively try I will try drinking a ton more water as well as green tea next cycle to see if that helps. If not I will stop the my allergy meds a few days, probably around cycle day 8 as my average o day is 14 but as soon as day 12 and late as day 16 as of right now. See if that works and then if I have to I will stop taking the meds all together. I may also buy some pre-seed as well.

I probably should not go as far as not taking them but if I have to I will.  Thanks for your help!
