Food Allergy

What should I do about food intolerances?

So we have recently started DD on solids. And so far, nothing has been an instant reaction. Instead, I see things happening after 3 or 4 days of giving her a particular food. With sweet potatoes, she started getting an eczema patch on her face. Carrots made her spit-up a ton. Pears made her spit-up a lot as well. Rice cereal has probably caused the strongest reaction in her, which was diaper rash and her face breaking out. She seems to tolerate squash, and that's about it.

Are these just signs that her GI system is just not quite ready for solids? I get concerned because the girl can eat. She is either at, or a little above the max. amt. of 32 oz. of formula day. (And she only drinks 4 oz. at a time.) And I know she wants to eat solids. I guess I just don't know if I'm making too big a deal out of her minor reactions, or I should wait a little longer to let her digestive system mature.

  • Does she have a dairy intolerance?  A lot of rice cereals have milk ingredients in them.

As for the other foods, I have no idea.  Peaches seem to give M diarrhea and gas, but that's the only solids issue we've run into so far.

  • how long do you introduce a new food before going onto the next one?  perhaps don't give her too much, start off with a little portion and see how she does.  Like you said, she may just not be ready for it.

is she formula fed or BF?

Is she on oatmeal? i would keep a close eye on her reactions and start a food journal (if you haven't already).

  • I believe most of the food sensitivities start in-utero, and tend to progress as baby gets older, if issue is unaddressed.  A change in diet, plus her taking the appropriate enzymes would be a healthy place to start.

I wouldn't give up yet.  In our case Maddie had a terrible reaction to peaches and I haven't been brave enough to try again.  She also spit up a ton with peas.  Cereal is a no go--makes her to constipated.

The first time we tried pears she had a reaction but 2 weeks later they turned into her favorite food.  Same with squash.

Which brand are you trying?  You may try switching brands and see if that helps.

So far as formula goes, if your daughter wants more than 32 ounces a day I say go for it.  At one point in time we were giving between 38-40 ounces a day to my super hungry girl.  Now she is down to 28, but she eats solids well.

Good luck!  I think she is ready...just trial and error on what works/what doesn't.  Except for the diaper rash, none of the reactions seem to severe to me and I think she'll grow out of it.
