Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Upset by doc

My LO went to get his vaccine today. (he's 7.5 months old and we are on extended Vaccine schedule)

I just mentioned to his doc that purees aren't cutting it for him and we started BLW.  He said we should take him to a speech therapist to make sure his tongue is moving correctly with the spoon and that my breast milk isn't enough for him and he won't grow correctly until I make him eat 3 meals a day.  I felt like I was a failure until I realized I have a curious alert EBF baby that likes to feed himself and doesn't want help.

Does anyone have any experience that would support this Doc?  Right now I am thinking about switching docs but I wanted to make sure others aren't getting the same speech if they are doing BLW.

Check out this website if you haven't already https://www.baby-led.com/. Your LOs primary source of nutrition comes from your breast milk until at least age 1, and if you are feeding a wide variety of healthy foods with BLW your LO should be getting more than enough nutrients. Do some reading about BLW to reassure yourself, then find a new doctor that is more in tune with your parenting philosophies.

  • My son has only been fed breast milk since he was born (BF until 8wks, EP ever since) and he has NEVER eaten a pureed food. I tried cereal twice and he never swallowed a bite, after that we switched to BLW. He had his nine month check up today and he is doing great in height, weight, developmental markers, etc. He had his iron level test and his hemoglobin is awesome, even without the vitamin supplements that were "recommended" at six months.

Oh, and he still doesn't eat "three meals and two snacks" a day. He has breakfast, a few snacks throughout the morning, some cheerios here, a few pieces of fruit there, something lunch like in the afternoon, and then maybe a couple bites of something while my DH and I eat dinner. When he acts hungry, I offer him food. If he doesn't want it,we move on.

Does your son stick his tongue to mimic you if you stick yours out at him? Does he babble at all? (Manama, dadada, lalala, etc) Can he chew and swallow finger foods ok? Has he had any problems breastfeeding? If he has had no problems with any of these things, I don't think there is any need to go rushing to a speech therapist. Most times if a child is tongue tied or has other similar problems, it interferes with BFing.
