Trying to Get Pregnant

Lurker/newb with a ? about HSG

My OBGYN ordered a HSG is this cycle is unsuccessful. What should I expect after the test is done? Is there a large amount of pain to the point where I should not go to work after?

Thanks!

I cramped very badly for maybe 2-3 minutes during the test and then somewhat badly for maybe 15-20 minutes after.  Bring your own pad and take pain killers a few hours before the test.

I took the day off of work, but I don't have a job where I could just sit for the rest of the day.

  • I had one done about two months ago and it wasnt too bad.  I did have severe cramping when she was inserting the tube through the cervix and into my uterus but that was it.  It did not last long.  I was able to see when my doc inserted the dye through the tube and all.  Very interesting.  Just be prepared to feel some cramping, like period cramping, but a little worse.  Afterwards, you should be fine.  Bring a pad because the dye (some) will seep out.  And don't wear any pants that you would mind getting stained.  The dye my doc used was yellow but still.  Hope everything turns out okay for you, if you have to get one.  Maybe this is your cycle!! Good luck!

  • I'm an x-ray tech and i help perform hsg's. They aren't too bad. Expect some cramping while they are inserting the catheter and then when they inflate the balloon on the catheter so the dye doesn't leak out. The radiologist should go over the pictures with you and explain it so you might have some answers quickly. Everyone is different but if it where me I would take the rest of the day off. Not because of extreme pain but you just might not feel up to it.

  • I had one a few weeks ago and went during my lunch break! It was pretty bad cramps during the procedure, but it doesn't last very long at all and I was fine to go back to work! I had some period like cramps off and on for the rest of the day, but nothing that was so bad that I couldn't work (I do have a "desk job" though)

    Good Luck!

  • For me the pain was all during the procedure. The cramping during the catheter insertion and then the dye going through was what hurt. I'm told it's similar to menstrual cramps, but I generally don't have cramps, so it was surprisingly uncomfortable for me. After the procedure, I was mildly achy the rest of the day and experienced some spotting. If you have to go to work, I see no reason why you couldn't. I would, however, be sure to bring a pad with you for any leakage and spotting.

  • I had mine done yesterday! Pain little intense but less than 2 min. Procedure is pretty quick. I cramped a bit on an off throughout the day but nothing more than a menstrual cramp feeling. Def need pads! I went through about 4 big ones, so that  was the unexpected part. Dr said it was normal and it subsided by nighttime. I went into work but left early as i felt a little nauseated and very tired. Overall, it wasn't too bad and i'm glad we did it to make sure things were in working order.

Good luck! A few OTC pain meds before hand helps :)
