DS officially registered for preschool! Now if he would just PT...

Sigh. I'm so excited he's signed up for preschool starting in August! I turned in the money and final forms yesterday. But the stubborn guy just won't PT. I hope it works out, but I'm getting anxious. I never, ever thought I'd be worried, but here we are. Ack.

I should add that I wouldn't even care and just delay starting him, but he will be getting continuing speech services through the school and I hate for him to miss out or lose the ground he has gained.

Guess I just wanted to whine! LOL.

Re: DS officially registered for preschool! Now if he would just PT...

  • Our sons school requires he be completely potty trained before starting. I wouldn't have signed him up if he wasn't.  I'm hoping DS2 is trained in the next couple months so I can send him with his brother, but I'm not holding my breath.  We planned on sending DS2 in he 2012-2013 school year anyway.

But I get what you're saying. I really want him to go this year cause they have extra room, but I know it's a long shot. : )

  • Are you doing full-day or partial? If it's a 2.5-hour thing, I'd probably worry less than if it's full-day.

But you also may find that as long as he knows what to do (even if he's stubborn about it for you), that peer influence is helpful once he starts class. :)

  • Because he qualifies for EI speech services, the district wants him to go 4 mornings a week. I think it's 2 h 45 m.

Registration was in early March, and I assumed he would have no trouble being trained by August. I just finally got his placement and sent the money in, still assuming we can do it in time. I hope so! I really think they expect him to start this year and not lose an entire year of speech. I wonder how flexible they are for kids in pull-ups. I'm guessing not very, but I'll have to ask them. Gah. Maybe they will allow him to start later in the Fall or something.

  • Just a curious question... b/c he is getting Special Need's services have you tried talking to the director and find out if they are willing to maybe make an exception for him?  My husband always teases me saying "if you don't ask you will never know for sure".  I'm often surprised (especially when it comes to my children) how much people are willing to work with me.

Yeah, possibly. I can definitely ask. However, considering he actually seems very bright and is just in the program for some lingering articulation issues, I guess I'd feel bad taking advantage, you know? I know there are kids who need some extra time/help to master potty training for legitimate reasons--AFAIK my kid is just being a PITA.

I just need to find the thing that motivates him and so far nothing has worked. I haven't found his "currency" so to speak (pretty sure he doesn't have one). But I will definitely speak to the teacher to see if they can work with a partially trained kid for a couple of months. He goes on the potty some of the time at home and I know he understands it all, which just makes it so frustrating. And maybe pp is right and that when he sees the other kids going, it will spur him on.

  • I completely understand.  We just started DS in a part-time summer preschool program and we made sure they were aware that he was not potty trained.  The place he is at now is ok with pullups, but we really want to put him into a better program in the fall.  The other places will not accept him unless he is completely potty trained.  This is the end of his 3rd week and so far it hasn't made a difference at all for him.  I was really hoping he would see the other kids going and it would help him, but he will not tell us he needs to go.  He holds it so we can get him to on the potty a lot, but if he has to go and we miss it he will just pee (or poop) in his pullup. Getting him to poop on the potty isn't happening at all and he even had a disaster at school last week because of it. They were on the playground, he pooped and then went down the slide, it was a huge, gross mess.  :(  I feel like his teachers blame me for him not doing well, but we've tried and he just does not care about it at all.  I don't know how to get him to care.

So yeah I have similar fears.

  • Ben is not going to Pre School, but I was in the same boat as you.  I didn't think he was ever going to be potty trained.  We tried at 2 and it was a disaster so I didn't try again until he turned 3 which also didn't go well.  At 3 years 6 months it was like a light came on and he went and got his undies and put them on and hasn't had but a few pee pee accidents since.  I know it might not be the same for your son, but I just know it happened quickly with us right around when he was 3 1/2.  Good luck!

  • Just wanted to say you are not alone! DS is starting preschool in the fall and has no interest in PTing. We are trying PT boot camp again in a few days, and thankfully the school is flexible with the 3 year old classroom, but man is it frustrating!
