No hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils?

I'm menu planning for DD's birthday party.  A friend of mine doesn't feed her DD hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.  What the eff does that mean?

ETA: Just wanting to clarify...I sent an email to my party guests asking about allergies.  She didn't just call me up and offer the info.

  • Those are trans fats, and usually found in packaged foods.  At home we avoid them at all costs.

Most bakeries don't have trans fats because they use whole ingredients, not boxed mix.

Fruits, veggies, yogurts and other whole foods don't have trans fats, either.

  • They're more commonly known as "Trans Fats" - you can basically read a label and tell if its in anything. Its in just about everything you find on the shelves, from chips to salad dressings, unless you shop at whole foods/central market/sun harvest/etc.  They're in most things because they're cheaper and readily available, but studies say they're bad for you for a number of reasons (that all come down to trans fats = poison).  Once you start reading labels, you learn pretty quickly what to avoid. :)
  • I try not to eat that crap either but I'd never go to a party and demand there be no trans fats.

  • Yeah, ditto Rosie and FCB - if it's in storebought stuff, you can find it on the labels.  If you're concerned about anything you might be making, just stay away from margarine, cool whip, shortening - anything "artificial" like that.  Some dairy products contain a little natural trans fats, but those are not the ones you are looking out for.  Hydrogenated and partially-hydrogenated oils are oils chemically altered to be more shelf-stable, so as long as you are using real, whole ingredients (butter vs margarine, etc.), you're fine.  Really, I wouldn't worry too much about it - there will no doubt be plenty of things she can eat.  (But it's still a strange thing to bring up to a party hostess...)

I agree with this.  We don't buy "junk" food at home and I try to go all natural with the groceries I buy.  However, I just think it's odd that the parent told you that.  Unless there is a medical reason such as an allergy, in that case I understand.  I think of it like, I wouldn't tell a friend who invited me over for lunch, "Thanks but I only eat organic."

  • Ditto pp. Although we never eat that in our home, I would NEVER say that to somebody!
  • Eh- after her clarification I wouldn't really worry about it.  It sounds like just a personal preference.

I'm allergic to sulfates and food colorings- as in, I'll get a migraine from Red40 if I eat Danon yogurt, much less red cake icing.  I wouldn't expect to be accommodated at a party, though.

Yeah, but this isn't an allergy.  It's a food preference.  Which, IMO, is rude to bring up to a party hostess.  That's like saying, "We don't eat pizza in our house, could you order something else for your party?"

  • We don't eat them either but I wouldn't bring it up in this situation. I'd tell close family or if you were my best friend but not anyone else. When we go to other people's houses generally I expect that we will be eating things we wouldn't make at home. That's why we don't go anywhere. Stick out tongue
