Trying to Get Pregnant

Question about taking morning temp for moms of LOs

I remember researching this when I was trying to get pregnant with my first and it was that you had to take it at the same exact time and it had to be before you got up.

So we're TTC now and I was thinking of taking my temp but my LO wakes up anytime between 4:30 and 6:30 so I don't know how I could take it at the same time every day without having days where I would have gotten out of bed and carried the toddler to my room already.

Am I thinking too much about this?  Has anyone gotten around it in any way?  Thanks!

Re: Question about taking morning temp for moms of LOs

  • If your LO wakes up between 4:30 and 6:30, just set your alarm for 4 or 4:30 and temp, then go back to sleep until you hear LO wake up.  I think that would be the easiest solution.

  • I have a LO who wakes up anytime between 7 and 830... this is our first cycle TTC and I took my temp for about the first 5 days of the cycle, and then stopped.  First, I would forget if I got up at a different time.  Second, sometimes I wake up when I hear her.. doze... wake up again.  I didn't feel like my temps were accurate.

This being said, I am not going to worry about my temps for the first couple of cycles and see what happens.  I did chart when TTC #1 and we were successful on the first cycle.  I find that I get more info from my CM rather than a retrospective look at my temps.

Seems like your LO wakes up SUPER early!  I would suggest setting your alarm 15 minutes before the earliest time she could wake up and take your temp. then, but 430 is a little early IMO!  I might try this next cycle if I feel like I need to chart.

This. We're TTC #2 and I temp at 5:30 (because it's just when I wake up naturally on my own) then go back to sleep until either DH's alarm goes off or DS wakes up.

  • I think we'll have to wait a few cycles before I set an alarm for 4:15!  And KSimone, he goes back to sleep after I go to him, so we're not up for the day then (my goodness, that would be awful- we get up at 8:30).  We're just still working on sleep issues so 4:30 is in fact a very great time for him to get up (way better than 12 & 2 & 3:30, etc)!  Maybe I'll stick with OPK for now!! Thanks for answering!

Well sounds like you are on the up-swing from some sleep issues :)  Good luck... I know how completely different it has been for me TTC#2

  • I temp on days that I get a good nights sleep and supplement with OPKs and check CM.  I can't always pin the temp shift to the exact day but it at least lets me see the range to give me comfort I did ovulate.

Also- you only need to get 3 hours of sleep.  So if LO wakes up at 4:30 and you sleep 5-8, you could temp at 8.  Just keep it consistent.

  • Personally, I take it EVERY TIME I wake up,  and pick the temp with the longest amount of sleep behind it. Along with CM & OPKs, FF has always been able to figure out my O date.

  • I would set my alarm for 4:45 then go back to sleep.  I still wound up with a lot of open circles, but as a pp said, I could at least see that I did O (even if I couldn't pinpoint the exact day).

If you aren't ready to set your alarm to temp, just do it whenever he wakes you up.  That's still better than nothing, and if you're also recording CM and using OPKs you should be fine.

    Good luck  :)

  • DS was waking up last month around 6:15am, so I set my alarm for 6am to temp. Lately though he has been up at 5:30am, so this cycle I will be setting the alarm for more like 5am and just going back to sleep or just getting up and getting ready for the day. If I were you, I would set my alarm for 4:30am and pray LO stays asleep so I could get more shut eye.

  • Thanks ladies for all those suggestions!  We're going to start trying on Monday, using "elementary" cycle planning (counting days and guessing) and OPKs (which are coming tomorrow).  And maybe I'll pick up a thermometer this weekend and just do it whenever he wakes up, like others said.  I appreciate everyone's responses!

    This.

I get up at 4am for work. On the days I don't have to work, I still wake up at 4, take my temp, and go back to sleep until DD wakes up between 6-7:30. It's the nights (like last night) that she doesn't sleep that throws everything off.
