Anyone planning to sign?

I wasn't, but I grabbed a book from the library on impulse yesterday and I think it may have talked me into doing at least some basics (milk, eat, more, all done, stuff like that).

Has anyone done it w/ an older child? Or anyone else going to do it? When will you start? I'm trying to learn a few signs myself, just so I know them and can start using them when I remember.

Re: Anyone planning to sign?

  • I'm going to do it!  I have a few friends who do the milk, more, all done, please, etc. and it works really well for them.  They strted consistently using signs around 4 mos.  Said DC didn't catch on for a long time (duh) but it's like any language, you just have to use it consistently.

  • We plan to sign, I have at least 3 books on the topic but have not got around to reading them yet. We should probably start pretty soon if she is going to learn them. I think I heard somewhere that babies are able to sign back to your around 4 months.

  • Yep, we are already using the milk sign. I guess I should refresh on what the others are, it has been a LONG time!

  • I am :) DH never does the signs, but I do.

Right now I'm doing simple ones with one hand (mommy, daddy, grandma, grandpa, uncle & aunt and hungry)

Once she's more stable and can hold her head I'll start more.

And if DH is holding her I use please, thank you, change and wash/bath.

  • I know people who had good experiences with it, so I figure it's worth a try. DH still thinks that it will just confuse things later but the data disagrees.

  • I meant to do it with DS and got lazy. I do plan on doing it this time around since we are still reaping some of the frustration from DS when he can't express himself. I plan on doing basics like "Please" Thank you" More" Milk" Eat" All done".

I plan on starting at 4-5 months consistently when we start more food besides milk.

  • I used sign with my older son and I loved the results. We starting at 6 months because that's when I came across the option. We caught on fairly quick and it was so nice to be able to communicate with him. It's been 8 years so my memory could be wrong but I honestly want to say once he got the hang of it he was never fussy...it helped that much. His favorite word was "more". I cannot wait to introduce LO to sign. Kaiser has classes that I'm going to take to refresh my memory.

  • I did it some with Holden and it's shocking how easy they catch on. He's a late talker so it's been really useful. I taught him "more" "please" and "all done" and he uses them all. I think I'll at least teach those again. With Holden it started in his music class (so like 6 months I think) and he really caught on by about 9 months. I think you may be able to do it earlier but it likely depends on the kiddo when they catch on.

  • YES! My first just was exited from speech, and sign was a life saver for us! She started really knowing them around 8 months and it was so helpful. I accredit sign for her calmness and lack of temper tantrums, because she's mostly been able to communicate her needs to us. She still uses a lot of the signs, but now she vocalizes the word too.

  • I have worked with my DD on signing and now everytime she says "pretty" she signs it. She likes to watch songs she knows online being done in ASL. I plan to continue working with her and my DS.
  • I am. Before baby, I worked at a preschool/daycare and we would teach the infants how to sign. It's pretty adorable, and really helps. I've always wanted to do it with my own child.

  • We did it with DD starting from 6 months.  She probably started signing back at about 9-10 months.  She knows:  milk, more, all done/finished, hot, dirty, share, airplane, sleep, tired, book, bird, home/house, car, several of the colors and a whole lot more than I can think of right now.  It was very useful especially when she couldn't talk although now that she can talk, I've really stopped signing with her all together with new words she doesn't know yet.

  • I wasn't planning on signing until I got a signing book for my baby shower. Now I am really excited about it.  I have no idea when you are suppose to start...  any suggestions?

  • I think it's fine to start whenever, but they probably won't really catch on until 4 months or later.
  • I plan to sign. Its worth a shot. If I can communicate with my baby pre-talking its definitely worth a shot.

  • Yes.  We signed with DD from the beginning and she caught on around 8 months with milk, more, please...and the others we taught her as we went.  It was very helpful and DAMN adorable.

  • I went to an afternoon workshop about signing then Ankaret was a babe.  They said to start at 2-3 months because babe starts to see a lot better at that point.  Usually starting earlier than this does not help them start signing sooner.

We used 3 signs with Ankaret: milk, more and all done.  They helped a bit, but she started talking very early so we didn't really use them for that long.

I'll probably focus on the 3 signs with Kaitlin too, and if they become really useful I may introduce more later.  For me it depends on how early she learns words.

  • I have already been doing the milk sign. I plan to add more soon.

    Here's a good link.

  • We definitely plan to sign.  Our good friends did the basics with their son (and taught them to all their friends) and it really seemed to help with communication.  Plus I think it would be fun!

  • I started "baby signing" with my first DD when she was just old enough to focus on me while I was talking to her, they say the more repetition the better lol.
It worked fantastic for us, She was able to ask for food (eat) and tell me when she was finished (all done) or if she wanted more before she could talk. She's almost 20 months old now and she still signs when she's holding conversations with us.
I also used this while working in preschool.
