Curious what your thoughts are on the Shettles method? I have a boy and a girl and now we are trying for #3. I don't really prefer one sex over the other, just curious if anyone had tried/is trying this.
My thoughts are that if in fact the Y sperm swim faster but die faster, and the X sperm swim slower and live longer... then sure, I bet Shettles gives you a better chance at one sex or the other. I don't by any means think that it is guaranteed, but I would imagine it would in fact give you a better chance.
Perosnally, I do not have a preference to which gender/sex I have first. I know my H would like a boy first, but we will see what happens. We are not using Shettles, we are having enough sex to just maximize our chances to have either.
The Shettles method *can* be about 70+% effective if you do everything involved. Given that you chances are already about 50/50 each way (really 52/48, I guess), it's not that great. I have heard that using Shettles to conceive a girl can mean that it takes much longer to conceive because the tactics avoid your most fertile time.
While I think there is truth in the Shettles method, there are SO many other factors that you have to take into consideration when it comes to gender like body temp and acidity in the vagina and uterus.
While I have always loved the idea of having a girl I will be so happy to have a boy or a girl.

1. There's only a 50/50 shot either way. Any "method" is bound to be right half the time.
2. You couldn't pay me to skip out on 50% chance at a baby
3. Trying to conceive a girl (I think) means you're not having sex within about 2-3 days of ovulation. Even if you could predict that flawlessly (which, we should all be so lucky and magical), sperm lives about 3 days, realistically, and that's in perfect conditions. That means there are going to be far fewer sperm left, if any, to meet the egg.

In an ideal world if I were younger and knew for certain that I wouldn't have any problems conceiving it may be kinda interesting to test the theory, but at the rate I'm going I'm just working on making a baby, regardless of sex.
The whole conception process is so amazing. It is so crazy to think about all the times that couples have sex and the millions of sperm that are released and just one of those little guys goings into making your baby. Had a different sperm made it there first you would have a totally different baby. I can't wait to experience it for myself!

Well, quite honestly I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have a girl, but I will not be trying this method. I believe I will have what I am meant to have even if its another boy. After having a m/c I am just hoping for a very healthy baby. I guess its possible there is some validity to this method, but I also wouldnt want to skip having sex on some of my most fertile days.
I want a girl, but I'm going to be happy either way. I gave some thought to the method, but the last several months we've just trying so hard for a BFP... I don't want to miss a single fertile day to get a girl.
If you do a chart search on FF for pregnant with a boy charts with sex only four days before O (the "girl" time), there are still many, many charts that show up. Soooo, there's some data that suggests the Shettles method doesn't count for too much weight.
We are using Shettles for a boy, but not because we specifically want a boy to complete our family. My daughter has a kidney condition that a girl sibling is 3x more likely to have. After meeting with my OB, we figured it was worth a non-scientific shot to see if we can avoid our next child from having to endure painful tests and sugery, like my daughter has had to.
We both read the book, I followed a high sodium diet, and we followed the recommendations for sex.
Numerous studies have found that the timing of intercourse has no bearing on the sex of the baby. Shettles = pseudoscience that could lower your chance of conceiving.

I was thinking about this myself and did read into it. I would much prefer to have a girl if I had a choice especially as we are only going to have one baby but at my age (36) I'm not sure we can be so picky! I have had friends who did have success with the Shettles method.... Or maybe it was just coincidence

I hear ya! I'm on cycle 25. When we first started "trying", we were using Shettle's method and trying for a girl, but now I feel like I took it for granted that we would be able to get pregnant at all. I will be happy if I can even have my own.

I've heard that it isn't all that effective, but have also heard good reviews about it, so...who knows?
It's not personally for me; I'll take whatever baby I'm meant to have! To each their own, I suppose...
I would think it would take long to get KU doing this method since you are limiting sex during your fertile window.
Nope.
Read Mega's answer, she explains how it works.

ETA: For a boy - orgasm = OK. For a girl- orgasm =/= OK. Supposedly. But if we are using PreSeed doesn't it balance the pH anyway??
