Best doublers for XS prefolds/covers

Hi!

We're having a heck of a time with LO soaking through his current diaper arrangement, especially since he's now willing to sleep 4 hours at a time (yay!). The additional laundry of one outfit per diaper is killing us.

Adding an insert/doubler seems like a solution. What is the best fit for newborn sizes? We're willing to consider the disposable kind.

We're using preemie sized prefolds with both XS Thirsties and Newborn Proraps for covers.

Any insights appreciated.

  • I'm new to CDing, so I'm not expert, but I'm wondering why you're still using preemie prefolds. Was your baby a preemie, or is he still super small? If he's bigger than 6 lbs or so, I would move up to a newborn prefold. The preemies usually have basically no absorbancy because they're for such small babies that don't need it. And then once you switch to newborn prefolds, you could use the preemies you already have as doublers if you still need a little extra.

  • Can you double up the prefolds?  I would also think that this means its time to get the next size up.  I have a few preemie PF's that came as inserts for some used pockets I bought and, while I love them as doublers, there is no way they would have contained my DD's pee at one month of age.

If you absolutely do not want to double up or size up, you could try putting a few layers of absorbent fabric in between the diaper and cover.  I used cut up orange Sham-wow's as doublers with my NB diapers (wash with diapers but must hang dry).  They worked well and I just made sure they they weren't next to the skin when I used them.

You could also buy hemp or bamboo doublers, but that would be more expensive then using something you had around your house, and it would make more sense spending the money to size up your PF's.

  • We do have a stock the next size up for pre-folds but they seem way too big to fit into the covers, and the covers aren't at all tight on him yet so I figure he's not big enough for the next size. He did start at 5.0 pounds but is now just over 10.

Is there a trick to folding the larger prefolds to fit in the small covers?

Will definitely try two prefolds at a time.

Not that I know of :-/... which is why I bought sized GMD PF's even though I'd be spending more in the long run.

Your best bet might just be doubling up until you have a chance to get some covers that fit over the bigger PF's.  I actually still have a few Imsy Vimsy NB covers that I'm using even though my DD is well over 12 lbs now.  But I'm using them with my flats and orange/yellow edge PF's, they don't fit over my OS fitteds.  If I was trying to put them over the standard one-size PF the cover definitely wouldn't fit, but I have OS covers that have snap down rises which can be adjusted for the bulkier diapers.

It might just be a judgement call on your part- whether to buy smaller in-between PF's or bigger covers.  Or just double up for now.

    Good luck!
