Question about feeding frequency

Hi ladies!

Our LO's are going to be 8 weeks old on Sunday. They are on both breastmilk (3/4 of their meals) and formula (1/4 of their meals). Their little tummies are like alarm clocks because they eat every 3 hours, except at night when they give us one long stretch (anywhere from 5 to 7 hours -- closer to 5 most of the time).

They both have 4.5 to 5 ounces each time.

My question is how long did your LO's go in between feedings when they were about 2 months old?

I'm wondering how long my world will revolve around 3 hour intervals ;0)

Thanks so much in advance!!!

Re: Question about feeding frequency

  • DH's family thinks I am weird but I keep them on the "every 3 hour" schedule until bedtime until they go off formula.  They say they've never heard of such a thing and that I should wait for them to start screaming signalling hunger.

  • Our DD is 6 months now, and I think she was at about every 3 hours until about 3.5 months or so, basically until she started solids. We started rice cereal at 12 weeks (early, but it was the right timing for her) when she was starting to eat every 2 hours again.  She has been taking a bottle closer to every 4 hours now...but sometimes it's still every 3, and she also has solid breakfast, lunch, and supper in there too.  So, it's still not much of a break.  I think our world may revolve around feeding for a while. At night, she goes from 7:30pm to about 6:30am (an 11 hour stretch) though, so we get a break at night.  We usually feed her though when she gives us her first hunger cues before she is "starving" hungry.

  • my world still revolves around 3 hour increments...more like 2.5....if its not a bottle, its a solid meal...ugh.  hang in there!!
  • We were doing every 3 hours for a long time.  Even now DS only goes maybe 4 hours between meals.  Breakfast 9, lunch 1, dinner 5..... sometimes the snack gives a longer stretch.

Anyway -- My point was that we were at 3 hours for a long time.

  • DS is still about 3-4 hours but he takes the same amount that your babies do right now (4-5oz/bottle).

At 8 weeks, both of my daughters were on a 3-hour feeding schedule during the day (and then on demand at night).  My older daughter went to a 4-hour feeding schedule around 4 months and my younger daughter is almost 5-months and is still on a 3-hour feeding schedule.  I think we may shift her to 4 hours sometime between 6 and 7 months - we'll see though.
