Activities as your child grows up...

Are there any activities/skills that you never learned growing up that you hope your child will learn? For example: I wish I knew how to play an instrument - any instrument. So in raising my kids, I would like to give them the opportunity to learn one.

I would never force them to do an activity they didn't want to do, but I will do whatever I can to introduce them to as many different options as possible.

  • I really want E to learn to ride horses. I didn't learn until I was in HS and I was awesome at it. I feel like I missed a great opportunity by not learning sooner. I was dancing instead which I wasn't that great.

  • I really want my kids to choose an activity and stick with it. They don't have to be the best at it but I want them to devote themselves to a hobby and see it through. that being said, I won't be drilling them to stay in something they absolutely hate but I won't let them quit just because they had a bad day. We moved a lot and as a result I am "doer of all, master of none". I participated in the following activities growing up: t-ball, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, ballet, girl scouts, soccer, chorus, cheerleading, band, piano,... I'm sure there's more. ... Even when we didn't move I would quit things half way through a season to do something else, or because I wanted to watch TV or something and my parents just let me. I wish they were harder on me over all actually but especially in this area. I am thankful for the opportunity to experience many different things but it would be more beneficial to me now if I had one thing I was really experienced in.

  • I think my parents did a great job at allowing me to pursue any activities I was interested in. However, they get a failing grade at teaching me the skills to be an adult. I'm determined to teach our kids about bills showing them what TV, internet, gas, insurance etc. costs. I was absolutely clueless. I think teaching kids WHAT things costs not telling them "a lot" makes them be more responsible with their life choices. I also refuse to allow my kids to be as lazy in the chore department as my parents did. I was one pampered little princess Embarrassed

  • A local grocery store offers cooking classes for kids as young as kindergarten. I would love for my kids to do that, and will participate in the classes  with  them.  I figure it will be a fun way to spend time  together and it also teaches them a life skill.

Also I think Hula lessons would be really fun.  I liked  the idea of having a daughter learning the Hula even before I was pregant.  We live in the midwest, but I have a place that will teach young girls the Hula.  I know it might seem weird but I think it would be cute.

Oh also swimming lessons.  My mom made us kids take them ( serious ones like your final  test is riding your bike into a pool with a winter coat on and trying to get out) and I am grateful she did.  We used to live in Phoenix and around swimming pools all the time.

My parents let me try whatever I wanted, but once we signed up for a season, session, etc, there was no quitting. I had to see it through until the end, then if I didn't like it I didn't do it again. I'm really glad they did this, because it made me not give up on things. I, as a parent, will do the same with my kids. You don't quit just because things get hard, and that's in life, not just in sports/activities.

Swimming.  I can swim, but I am not the greatest swimmer.  I want DD to be a strong swimmer, because the water makes me nervous.  I also wish I could play the piano.  She does love her play keyboard.
