Trying to Get Pregnant

Dumb question regarding SA

Hi ladies,

I have a really dumb question for you. I've noticed that a lot of your husband's have gotten a SA done. My question for you is ... who does he go to for this? A general practitioner? A specialist of some sort? My husband has been offering to go get checked out and I have no idea who he'd go see.

Thanks!!!

PAIF/SAIF/etc welcome!

Re: Dumb question regarding SA

  • Well first off, how long have you been trying? Many dr's won't do a SA before 6-9 months of trying unless there are reasons to do so. DH had one at 3 months of trying because of complications he had as a child.

DH went to a urologist for this. I think it really depends on what your general practitioner does.

  • Most women (well their SO's) get them done around 1 year of ttc. Your obgyn should be able to order this, or he could ask his general practitioner or a urologist. Most places can send him home with a sample cup and he can collect at home and he can take it into a lab within an hour of collection.

  • I met with my OBGYN in May and she is going to refer me to a RE in September (which will be one year). She said DH's GP can order the SA for my DH and he can go ahead and have it done if that cycle was a bust (I was 8DPO when I went). Clearly it was and so was the next one so I had DH call and get the referral and then it was a matter of finding a lab that could do it without a long wait time.

  • We had DH's SA done through an RE, but we also could have gone to a general lab (like Quest Diagnostics) or a urologist. If you speak with your OB/gyn, they can refer you to facilities/docs in your area that can perform the test.

  • When I went for an appointment to dicuss being anov, my doc suggested Clomid. But before I started it he wanted my DH to get a SA. He referred us to a clinic that did them for free.

  • Hi there! This is not dumb at all, I just wanted to add a little tidbit about the general lab. We were referred to have a SA for DH by my OBGYN. (at about 9 months of trying, just to rule out some things) For insurance reasons, she said that we may get more of the cost covered if DHs general practitioner wrote the orders. SO, DH was going to the DR anyway for unrelated sinus issues, and just through in there, "oh hey, can I get the paperwork for a SA" which he was more than happy to provide. TWO things I wanted to clarify though: at this point DH should have asked him for a specimen cup...it was a little tricky to get one (PP--the drugstore!? I'm such an idiot. See, know I'll know for next time) and two: DH didn't specifically ask the DR which lab to go to. Our town has a "Quest Diagnostic" center in it, so we figured that was the place. BUT, not all labs do SA, it was a little tricky to find one that did. Other than that, everything was smooth sailing. GL to you! and thanks for posting this :)
