Weird baby schedule

Hi all. Little girl has got a strange routine going on, let me run it by you. She is 4 weeks old today, and exclusively eats expressed breast milk from the bottle. She usually does not eat between 10pm and 6-7am. She basically sleeps from midnight to 6-7 am almost every night. I am not complaining, but I am confused how a newborn can go 8-9 hours without eating anything? She gets 24-29 ounces a day of breast milk, which is what she should be eating according to the guidelines. She is also putting on weight. However she is very fussy and restless during the day, hardly taking any naps. I pretty much feed her on demand during the day, but any input from anyone about such a long stretch without food? Anyone have a similar experience? TIA

Re: Weird baby schedule

  • Maybe she is eating too much at each feeding, so she gets hungry causing her to be fussy and restless? I really have no idea though.

  • Both of my sons have been very good night sleepers early on. With the first one, it alarmed me as well how long he could go without food, but my pedi told me as long as they are gaining appropriate weight then just enjoy it. Also, my first DS had health issues that led us to focus a lot on his weight gain and make sure it was sufficient, and even with that no one worried about him going long stretches without food early on. Try not to worry about that and just get some sleep yourself. They often revert to bad sleeping around 4 months so it's good to enjoy now if you can.

You should still try to force naps during the day though, because yes, that is likely leading to the fussiness. One suggestion on how to do that is to swaddle baby and then walk them around. In time you will of course want her to fall asleep on her own, but when she really needs sleep and isn't doing it herself, I find that works for us. Just an idea.

One last thought on the day fussiness is that if it is always right after feedings it may be reflux. Mention it to your pedi if it keeps up.
