Line drying=stiff prefolds?

I have been line drying lately to save electricity (It takes almost 2 hours for my dryer to dry 6 prefolds) but the prefolds turn out stiff and not soft if I line dry them.  I'm 1000% sure that I'm washing them right and if I put them in the dryer, they soften up a bit.  What am I doing wrong?  Should I rinse more?

  • All my inserts get crunchy when I line dry. I just throw them in the dryer for 5 or so minutes to soften them up once they are line dried.

  • Anything I line dry is a little stiff. I usually toss it in the dryer for a couple of minutes and they soften. But I doubt you're doing anything wrong, it's just how things line dry.

Have you looked into wool dryer balls? I really think they've cut down our dry time.

This and I've noticed the same.  I'll throw mine in the dryer when slightly damp with the dryer balls and they soften right up.

  • Its just what happens. You could dry as others have suggested, or you could just not worry about it.  They get less stiff pretty quickly once they go on the butt.  The smae thing happens with all my clothes I line dry.  DH can't stand his towels stiff like that, But it doesn't bother me at all and they get so much cleaner (don't get that msuty smell as soon as they get wet) like when I dry my towels in the dryer. The magical power of the sun is worth a little stiffness :-)

  • For the most part this just happens, but you can try placing them out in the morning or evening, rather than at the hottest part of the day.  The slower they dry the softer they will be.  Once they are already crunchy you can toss them in the dryer, or sometimes I just wad them up in a ball and smooth them out a few times and that ends up making them soft enough.
