Another name and cost of Flank Steak

Does flank steak have another name? I can rarely find it where I live under the name flank steak and when I do, it's about $14 for 1.77lb.

I did a search online and one post said that london broil is also known as flank steak but I wasn't sure about that...

Re: Another name and cost of Flank Steak

  • Here it's just called flank steak, but yes, it's sometimes called london broil. Ask the meat dept. guy to be sure, though, because sometimes round steak can also be labeled london broil. I'm sorry, I don't buy it often enough to know the price.

  • PP is right.  London Broil is a cooking method for tougher pieces of meat but its caught on as a cut name for many tough cuts.

Flank steak is sometimes hard to find at retail and its not cheap b/c so much is exported as well as snatched up for fajitas in the restaurant industry.  Similar cut but equally hard to find are skirt steaks.  Something comparable from the chuck is a part of the underblade, commonly known as the Sierra Cut - if the meat cutter knows what they are doing.  HTH!

  • I was also going to rec skirt steak. It's delicious and I can usually get it for 1/2 - 2/3 the price of the flank steak.

  • Thanks ladies. I am going to the store today to look for some more. Two of my recipes this week call for it such as mongolian beef and the other recipe calls for it to be boiled and then shredded. Can I do this with a london broil or skirt steak? I think skirt steak is real thin, so I don't think boiling and shredding that will work out well for me.

  • I would use london broil or top round or even a chuck roast would work for shredding. I wouldn't waste my money on flank or even skirt steak if you are going to boil and shred it. You really can cook and shred just about any cut of meat. When I shred beef, I usually buy a chuck roast because it's cheaper and it's fattier. I cook it for hours in beef stock and spices. The fat adds so much flavor and then when I shred it, I discard the actual fat.

Flank steak is not the same as london broil where I'm at - London Broil = Top Round. Flank steak is around $8.99 a pound. I'm making it for dinner tomorrow night. The only way I cook flank steak, skirt steak or hanger steak is marinating it and then grilling or broiling it and slicing it very thin.

  • london broil and flank steaks look similar but in my experience they definitely are not the same.  i have an amazing recipe for flank steak and i tried using a london broil for the same recipe and it was not nearly as good.  the flank steak shreds really nicely.  i used to be able to find it all the time but now it is more difficult and it comes in the vacuum packaging now, which i am not keen on.  i haven't tried the skirt steak but i agree with the pp that is probably closer to flank than a london broil would be.
