AND another spin-off: Were you surprised when he proposed? AND, did you pick out your ring?

I wasn't surprised, and we picked out the ring together (and this is extra funny that we even did that, because I only wore it for awhile. I hated wearing jewelry prior to this, why waste a couple thousand on something?).

  • Not really suprised by the proposal. I gave input on the ring, but he chose it out. He did good, I love it!

  • Not surprised. I found the ring while snooping for my christmas present. I stopped by the house at lunch from work to let the dog out and snooped a bit. Found it, tried it one and it got stuck. I had to call a coworker on how to get off.

I finally just told him a couple of years about this.

Yes I was surprised and no I didn't pick it out.

We were living on my parent's property and he had a plan. It did not involve living at my parent's house. He wanted to get our own place and live there for a year before getting engaged. Then be engaged for a year before married and married a year before having kids. That all went to sh!t on Christmas of 2003 when my grandmother gave us a handmade kingsize bedspread. That night he told my mom he wanted to ask me to marry him, but he didn't have a ring. The next day he bought a ring.

He waited a week and proposed on New Year's at the beach during the sunset (with a poem!). I remember thinking, "What the fVck is he talking about?" while he was reading the poem.

  • I wasn't surprised by the actual proposal.  I WAS surprised the morning of when he said "Come on.  Let's go to Beckers (local jewelry store)." And when we got there, he let me pick whatever ring I wanted (with his input).  And he bought it that day.  Asked me that night.
  • Yes I was surprised, no I didn't pick it out or give any input. And I love it. Much bigger and prettier than I ever would have expected or picked out myself.
  • I knew he was going to propose soon but it still was a surprise. He picked out the perfect ring all by himself <3
  • Not surprised that he proposed in general, but totally surprised when he actually did it (if that makes sense). I didn't pick out my ring but we had discussed it and h knew what i liked.

  • I was surprised.  It didn't even look real to me because I was in disbelief.  It was sort of both bigger and smaller than I'd pictured.  I just couldn't make sense of it.

I did not pick it out and wouldn't have picked out this exact shape, but love it now.  I did want simple, not big, very good quality, no extra things, and gold color.  Those I got. I would have picked a square cut one.  Hoe chose the round one with 6 prongs because it was more traditional to him and because 6 prongs are less likely for the stone to fall out and he knows what I put jewelry through.  He was right.

Oh yeah, I remember a couple years before he actually proposed him being really excited about my birthday and his "gift". Everyone told me he was going to propose. Um... it was a whip (and a few other things). A really nice whip, but not a ring.

So I learned not to expect sh!t when it came to him asking.

  • I knew it was coming, but had no idea it would happen the evening it did. I had picked the setting for the ring and he chose the stone separately himself. We both agree that it's a good thing I chose the band because he would have had his mom or sister pick it out and their taste is *very* different from mine lol!

  • I knew he was going to ask, but didn't know when. We picked out the ring together and then he hid it until he was ready to pop the question.

  • We had looked at rings one day...guess he paid attention. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I was stunned by the proposal. He took pictures of places of importance and printed words to make a story on construction paper.  He put them in a book and one afternoon handed it to me totally out of the blue...the last picture was of the ring. His proposal ROCKED!!!

  • I was totally surprised.  We had a fight about getting engaged the week before.  Turns out he had the ring and was just waiting for the "perfect" time.

  • I told him the ring style I wanted (he had asked).  I knew he was going to propose, but wasn't expecting it the day it happened.

  • I was hoping it would happen soon since we agreed to wait until after we both graduated from college. He proposed during my graduation ceremony when I walked across the stage. We talked about rings a couple of times and looked at them for fun but he picked it out on his own.

  • Yes, I was surprised.  No, I did not pick out my ring.

We had discussed never getting married and I thought we were cool with that.  We were sort of talking about having kids and moving into a house in the near future, and I guess he decided it was time.  That, and after 13 years, he couldn't figure out what to get me for Christmas.  :)

  • No, I wasn't surprised.  He didn't really propose, it was more of a mutual agreement :)

We didn't even have a ring until 3 months later after we already booked the church and the hall.  DH and my mom conspired together.  They took my mom's e-ring and an anniversary band and melted them down into a ring.  I had shown a picture to my mom of what I liked, they used that example.

  • DH picked out my ring. He is notoriously cheap, so I wasn't expecting much. He blew me away. He picked it out w/ some help from my family. The proposal was a surprise as well, but I kinda caught on earlier in the day.

  • Not surprised by the proposal in general- I knew it was coming but thought it would be that summer.  He surprised me in April by building me a treehouse in our backyard for my b-day (I had told him on our first date I always wanted atreehouse growing up but never got one). He proposed in the treehouse that night.

He did the ring on his own.  The only thing he knew is I wanted a Canadian diamond so I could be sure it was mined ethically. The ring is not want I would have picked, but I love it.

  • No. We'd been talking about it for a while, and he came out and told me he needed to know what kind of ring I'd like.

ETA: I did not go with him to pick out the ring, but I did say I liked clean lines, no frou-frou. My sisters went with him and they knew I've always liked the Tiffany three stone ring with sapphires, but square.  But I liked other designs too, and I didn't really know for sure what it would look like.

  • I was very surprised!  We got engaged while on vacation in Maui.  I did not pick out my ring.  He picked out the stone in NYC and worked with a local jewelry store in Philly (where we lived at the time) for the setting.
  • I was surprised. I mean, we'd talked about getting married *someday* so it wasnt totally out of left field, but the actual proposal totally surprised me. And no, didnt pick out the ring. He had it custom designed!
  • I knew we would get engaged but I didn't know when. And he picked out the ring himself.
  • I was shocked! moreso that he and a jeweler friend had designed the ring over the course of a month and a lot of our friends knew about it- I really never saw it coming and couldn't believe it.

  • Yup.  He proposed on Jan 2.  I remember sitting in the Lazyboy (fully reclined) when he 'summoned' me upstairs.  I was all like "whaaaaaat?!!???!!" thinking he needed me to unplug a toilet or something.

Turns out he had a ring.

    D'oh.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I was surprised.  He did it while we were visiting his parents' house, which I would never have expected.

I didn't pick the ring.  He purchased it from a jewelry store in his hometown and picked it up the morning he proposed.

  • Yes.  I figured it would happen eventually, but was not expecting it when it happened.  I was 3 days from my due date with L, and figured we'd be engaged after he was born.  It was the last thing on my mind and he totally caught me off guard.

  • Totally suprised -- he had the ring in his pocket on the way down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I did not pick out the ring.
  • Sort of.  I had an idea it was going to happen as we had been talking about for a few months but he threw me off with a promise ring a few weeks before and said he had really wanted to propose but wanted to save up the money for a nice ring first and that we would talk more when my work slowed down (I was traveling a ton for work at the time and never home and we knew that we ended within a few months.).  A few weeks later, over New Year's weekend, he planned a surprise getaway for us and proposed then.  I had a feeling it was going to happen that weekend but was not 100% until he showed up at my apartment with roses.  He picked out the ring 100% by himself.  I had told him about different styles that I liked./disliked but we never went ring shopping or anything - I would just point out rings I saw on others.  He did an amazing job and I love my ring and still get compliments on it all the time.

  • No, it was no surprise at all, and we picked out the ring together. It was custom designed by a family jeweler that he knew and liked his work. I loooooove it.
  • I did pick out the ring. I was very surprised when he proposed, though.  I knew that it was coming within the next few months, but he had led me to believe that he would be buying the ring after he got his tax return, and I knew that he hadn't gotten that yet.  So I was not expecting it at all the weekend that he asked.
  • I was 100% shocked.  I just told people at work who were teasing me that it would be my birthday present that there was no way, he wasn't ready yet, etc. (though I knew he was going to be stuck with me for life).  When he proposed I was shocked.  He did it with a simple solitaire, and we went back together to look at settings.  I narrowed it down to 3 and he chose the final one.
